I have tried to get technical support for CAPTIVATE CS4 for about 4 hours only to get through to someone in INDIA who has absolutely not a clue of what I am talking about and who can barely speak english. Then I was promised a call back within 10 minutes which never came, waited on hold for over 30 minutes, only to be disconnected, then eventually got through again only to be hung up on!
I am flabergasted that it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to get any technical assistance from anyone at ADOBE. You can spend literally going around and around in circles on the Adobe website - you click on "Contact Us" and it's about another 50 questions !!!!! only to end up back where you started from ! I found a phone number in Sydney, which diverted me back to the morons in INDIA !!!
Software is great - customer support TOTALLY SUCKS!
I would print out that knowledge base article and take it to the IT folks whether you're using Windows Server 2003 or not.

This has GOT to be some kind of permission/security thing.
Thanks

Hi there
I've heard many complaints about support for many different companies. Perhaps if you could tell us the issue here we might offer a way past it.

Hello Rick,
Basically I would like to insert a video (a .vob file) into my Captivate 4 file for publishing onto our intranet. I converted the .vob file to a .flv file and it works in Preview, but when I publish the project, the .flv video didnt play. I read it might have something to do with metadata but I am not a technical person - I managed to create my Captivate software simulations quite well, but that's about it. I have Googled conversion software with specific reference to metadata, but it's getting too complicated. I'm beginning to think I won't be able to do this.

Hi Kay
You might take a look at the link below for a metadata utility
If the video doesn't play after you upload to a server, there could be a few different issues at play here.
The Server may need to have a MIME type configured in order to serve FLV files
The server may be UNIX or a UNIX variant. In this case, the file naming structure may need to be examined in order to see if you need to change anything. For example, the Captivate file is referencing MyVideo.flv and the actual file name is myvideo.flv. So you need to either rename the reference or the actual file name on the server to match.
Hopefully something here was helpful... Rick

Hello
I have already downloaded flvmdi but I don't know how to use it.
The video doesnt play the Captivate's Preview (once published), I havent
even published it to a website yet.
Has no one ever come across this problem yet?

Hello again
I believe you said you were using Adobe Captivate 4? Are you able to share the FLV? If so, I'd be happy to try it from my end and see if I can figure out why it's not working for you. If it's under 100MB, you could use yousendit to ship the file. My address is rstone75 (at) kc (dot) rr (dot) com.
If you aren't comfortable with that, I totally understand.

Hi,
Thanks for the offer, but the .flv file is an internal company
presentation. Can I ask - have you ever inserted a converted video file
into a Captivate program before?

Hi Kay
Indeed I have. I've done it using my own video as well as sample video.
Click here to download a sample clip that I use in Captivate classes. If it works for you, you know that it's related to your own video clip. If not, it's got something to do with your captivate setup.

Hi Rick,
Have you added a .flv file to your Captivate program which has been
converted to .flv from another format?

Good question!
Actually I've not tried that quite yet. But I'm about to. I've got a Kodak Zi8 and am about to try converting a MOV from it to an FLV and insert into Captivate.
Hang on a sec and I'll see how it goes...

Hello again
I just tested and it seems to work.
I used a Kodak Zi8 to record a small clip. The camera saves as MOV format. I then used the Adobe CS3 Media Encoder to convert from MOV to FLV. I then dropped the FLV into Captivate. Published and uploaded the Captivate content and the FLV to my web server. The result is what you see above.

Hi Rick
Did you insert the .flv file into your Captivate project (i.e. Insert,
Flash Video) ?? Then publish choosing the Flash (SWF) option?
Because you mention that you uploaded the Captivate content and the .flv
file to your web server.
If so, next question - what is Adobe CS3 media encoder?

Hi Kay
Indeed I used Insert > Flash Video as the means to insert the video file. I also published it out using the Flash SWF option. That's what I meant when I said I uploaded the Captivate content and the FLV to my server.
If you have installed the Master Collection (many different Adobe applications) you have access to the media encoder. This is an application that allows you to convert from one media format to another.

I use a program called "Any Video Converter" and most of the time it works great. I have the free version, but they also make a professional version that you can buy if you need more features.

Hi
Have you used this program to convert a video file into a .flv file? Then
inserted it into a Captivate program for use on an intranet?

Hi Jay
I tried the Any Video Converter and the newly formatted .flv movie
actually plays in my browser preview, but when I uploaded the whole
Captivate folder (including the .flv file) to our intranet, it no longer
plays !!
Any ideas
Many thanks,

Kay,
Well, at least you're one step closer. I wish I could help with the intranet problem, but I don't use an intranet. Maybe one of the gurus on this forum can make a suggestion.

Hi Jay
Yes - one step closer. Now it's really becoming frustrating - so close !!
Many thanks.

Hi Kay
The fact the video plays in your browser after you Publish the project but not after you upload to the intranet is suggestive that your web admin types need to configure the FLV MIME type on the intranet servers.
You can confirm this by opening the browser and attempting to play the FLV directly by specifying just the path and FLV file name in the URL.

Hi Rick
As a matter of fact, the video also plays okay when I click on the .htm
file from Windows Explorer (I get Captivate to create a .html file for
me), and as before it works fine when I preview the file in my browser,
BUT yes, when it's uploaded, nothing there!
Very frustrating...
Hey, guess what ! (I think this is what you meant) ... I just opened
my browser, then went File, Open, and browsed/navigated to the .html on
our actual server folder (where the file is uploaded to), and the video
plays !!!!
But the rest of what you said ..."your web admin types need to configure
the FLV MIME type on the intranet servers" - I don't know what you mean
by this. And if I don't know, the IT guy here probably won't know...

Hello again
If you re-read the thread, my second post contains a link that you probably need to have the folks that manage your intranet server review. I'll post again below:
The link provides steps for them to follow.

Hi all again,
Can I ask a really dumb question - should we have a FLV player installed?
My IT guy told me the .flv file inside my Captivate project won't play
because I don't have an .flv player
Many thanks
Kay
