Issue

A SCORM 1.2 course published with Captivate 9 is producing a 502 bad gateway error when tested in Moodle 2.9.1 and https://demo.moodle.net. The course was published as a SCORM 1.2 package.

Additional Information

  • The course export has been tested in other learning management systems as well and did work on those systems. Those include:
    • Saba
    • Latitude
    • SCORM Cloud
    • ADP
    • Cornerstone OnDemand
    • SkillPort
    • Success Factors/Plateau
  • The course also utilizes only HTML5, not SWF files.
  • Other Courses created in Lectora and other software do work in Moodle

Specific Error

  • The specific error Moodle produces a bad gateway error,  “Error 502 Ray ID: 310a219f98b65c69
  • Trying all of the standard means suggestions regarding has had no impact (clearing temporary internet files, reloading file, trying again later, etc.)

IE F12 Console

This does not give any indication of actual errors, though there are a few warnings:

Summary

While this course has been tested in multiple systems and works in them, it does not seem to do so in Moodle. There are no clear indications as to why.

If the course works in more than half a dozen different LMSs and one of those is SCORM Cloud, my guess is that this is an issue with Moodle and not Adobe Captivate. I have published dozens of courses to Moodle using Adobe Captivate over the years and haven't run into this problem.

Moodle is a bit of a special case when it comes to SCORM usage and Captivate has for some time had a special drop-down menu option in the LMS settings area especially for Moodle courses.

Have you checked with the Captivate developer to make sure they in fact DID use this setting and not just one of the normal LMS settings?

Hello Rod,

thank you for your expertise to Captivate and Moodle. In our projects we have problems with the reporting between a Captivate SCORM 1.2 package and Moodle, but only on mobile apple devices with iOS 14 and Safari. Are there more recommendations, which Preference settings to be used in Captivate to optimize the communication with Moodle?

I am assuming we are talking about HTML5 output ONLY here, correct?

As far as I know, all you should really need to do is select this option in Quiz > Reporting.

QuizReportingMoodle.png

Other than selecting Moodle as the LMS, I have only ever used normal SCORM 1.2 settings because Moodle doesn't claim to support SCORM 2004.

If you are still having issues with your current project even after using the Moodle option in Captivate, then you may need to test whether the same issue presents in iOS devices with even a very simple blank Captivate project with a singe True/False quiz question.  If that simple project works fine on mobiles, then there's something in your project that is tripping things up.
