PowerPoint slide background turning black

I am creating a Captivate project from PPT slides. The original PPT file was in PowerPoint 2007, so I did a Save As into 2003 format.

All looks well until I import the slides. When I import (and even in the thumbnail view before I import), the slides have a black background and most of the text has disappeared.

Any ideas on a workaround for this?

I was able to figure out a (weird) workaround by editing the slide master.

With the background white, and the transparency at 0%, the background comes out black.
If I turned the background black, transparency is set to 0%, the background comes out gray.
If I turned the background black AND turned to transparency to 100%, then it came out white!

Sheesh - odd!
