Question

Speech to Text

Can anyone recommend a utility to convert speech to text files?

I inherited an eLearning routine full of MP3 narration, but the original scripts are gone.  I need to modify things but its tough without the text.

Manually transcribing them would be prohibitively time consuming.

Thanks.

It depends on the audio in your MP3 - is it just a single person talking?  This may work with Dictation Pro. Use a hardware MP3 player and feed the audio from the headphone back into your microphone input.  Download here:

Premire Pro will pull the audio out of video and turn it into text...might it do it for audio as well?  Not sure, I haven't used PP for this functionality but worth looking into.

Fortunately, my IT guy found a bunch of old files hidden away

in the cloud, so I have the scripts I needed.  But its still a good question.

The audio was generated by a text to speech tool, the same one that is now part of Captivate natively in fact, using the Paul voice as narration for the slides.  The scripts had gone away so I was left with the audio files only that I needed to edit.  Much easier when you have the original text, which is why I needed the speech to text engine to revert things.

It would still be interesting to know a tool that can manage it, just in case.

Anyway, I'm set for now.  Thanks for the replies.

    Hi there

I understand Adobe Soundbooth may have that capability. You might also try Dragon Naturally Speaking. But that generally listens to a voice and converts that to text. But who knows, maybe it also works with sound files.

    Cheers... Rick

Soundbooth does not exist anymore, it has been replaced with Audition.

As far as I can tell, Audition does not handle the conversion, at least not as part of the demo.
