When I download a book from my public library I can open it in digital editions 4.5 but when I transfer it to my device (kobo) and try to open it on the kobo it says "This book is protected by DRM. Because you previously deauthorized your eReader, you need to re-import the book using Adobe Digital Editions." I tried erasing authorization and setting git up again but it still won't work. Erased and downloaded a new edition of ADE, that didn't work either. Tried different books and libraries but still have problem. Called kobo and after troubleshooting with them they say it as ADE problem. Please please please help! Thank you!

This thread is old but incase anyone is suffering from the same problem here in January 2023. I have finally figured out a hack to get my Kobo to work.
For the record, I have tried everything: De/Re Authorizing, deleting books, overdrive account vs adobe account, etc. I couldn't use ADE V3 as my Mac is running 64 bit and it's not supported. I thought I was hooped until I came across this in my hours of searching:
- Download another random book. One you HAVE NOT had on hold (this is important becau

I have been following this thread for a couple of years now, and was extremely frustrated with both Kobo and Adobe. Not sure why they can't work together! For awhile, I had no problems with my Kobo as it had the Overdrive app on it, and most of the books I wanted to check out worked with Overdrive from my library. There were a few older books that were ePub only and would have to read those on my laptop, as my Kobo would always give me the error message about ADE. (I tried all the suggestions here and nothing worked!) Then this past winter, I found out Overdrive was going to be discontinued, and Libby would take it's place. I went to the Kobo website and it said they did not support Libby, so I figured I was done with Kobo. I started researching new eReaders, tablets etc but didn't really know what to do.
We went to FL for three months and I continued to use my Kobo, since Overdrive hadn't been discontinued yet. Now we are home again, and I knew I would have to get serious about looking into this. I downloaded the Libby platform on my laptop and thought I might as well give it a try. I had a couple books on my wish list that came up as available, so checked them out. Checked out books have a menu attached to them, and one of the options is "Read with". I clicked on that, and under "other options" Epub comes up. I clicked on that and as if by magic, it downloaded it directly to my Kobo. And the best part is, you don't have to use Adobe at all! I realize that not all libraries use Overdrive or Libby and so this will not work for you. But hopefully it will help someone so you don't have to buy a new ereader.

Libby platform? I can't find such a thing that works on a laptop, are you using a windows laptop? Maybe you are just logging into Libby via a web browser?
can you clarify?

Sorry, that was not a good way to explain it. I just sign into my library's website and use the Libby tab that they have incorporated into their digital library website.(I do have a Windows laptop). But no, the Libby app does not work on a laptop, at least my old laptop!

Ok thank you. Will try that too!
or else pick a book clear of copyright fees and do the old way. So frustrating.

Here's a simple solution to this old thread. That may have been answered previously but I didn't went thru the 300+ replies! That happens to me a few times a year, and I just spent some time to try everything suggested without success. You need to download a 2nd book in ADE, transfer it to your Kobo and bingo... no more error message.

If you have ebook purchased from Google Playstore for example, export them in epub or pdf format (note it's a DRM protected). Then use Adobe Digital Edition, sign in with Adobe ID, add the ebook into your library. After that, connect your Kobo or other ereader to computer , right click the ebook, select "copy to device", copy to your "ereader name" , that's all you need to do.
Rememeber to eject then unplug your e-reader. For example, Kobo will start loading/import the document, within minutes, this ebook can be seen in "my library". Hope that's help. (I am on Window OS).

I think that you are missing the point of this thread. What you say works most of the time, but then ADE displays the error message that is the title of this topic.
This is a very long-standing problem, but neither Adobe or Kobo have done anything to fix it. Adobe's handling of DRM is broken, but they have no interest in helping us because we don't pay an exhorbitant subscription for ADE, we pay them indirectly everytime we buy a book controlled by their buggy DRM.

To anyone else who also may have this issue - it has also plagued me but I have finally managed to solve it (for now).
Using a new computer and a new kobo device and I was still receiving the message that there was a DRM issue. I also had "phantom" files being listed in my library on digital editions.
However, I have finally managed to open a book borrowed from my library on my kobo by creating a new Adobe ID and authorising the new ID. So it seems that the issue lies with Adobe.
Hopefully creating a new account works for others in this extremely frustrating situation.

I hate to tell you that this is only a temporary solution. The bug can occur anytime and doesn't relate to your account, I did the same thing (set up a new Adobe A/C) years ago when this thread was new and still occasionally receive this message.
