I am having the same problem. I bought an ebook from googles store and downloaded it fine on my computer a couple of weeks ago. I got a new computer, downloaded Digital Editions and registered it (when I downloaded the software on my old computer it didn't ask me to register it so I didn't know I had to). Of course the book I bought didn't work, but I purchased another so I could make sure it was working. It is not working! I get the Error getting License Server communication problem: E_ADEPT_IO every time I try to download it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, I have done the Allow Adobe Digital Editions on the Windows Fireproof (as someone suggested). I even shut down my virus software in case that was the problem. Nothing. I can download a free book from the google website just fine. HELP!!! Please!

Hi,
I searched through my email for the help I got by filing a help
report, but I apparently deleted it because it turned out my problem
was indeed my antivirus, which I had recently updated with the 2011
version. I would suggest filing an official report; contrary to what
a previous person claimed, they did make specific suggestions beyond
the uninstall-reinstall-try-try-again routine. However, my problem
turned out to be deeper in the system than their fix could handle, and
was affecting far more than my Digital Editions. My Outlook mailbox
was no longer connecting with my Gmail, other downloads were borked, I
just didn't realize it. After I had taken the steps recommended by
Adobe help rep, I got a different error message that pointed directly
and solely to my antivirus, which, try as I might, I could not
deactivate. Ultimately, I had to completely uninstall Windows and
reinstall, and switched to a different antivirus provider (Avast, if
you're into free antivirus). Anyway, I'm sorry I can't find the
directions Adobe help staff gave me, I'd pass it along if I still had
it. I would definitely file a report, they were very helpful and
prompt with their response. (although it took me forever to realize
this, since I had the problem with my Gmail connecting with my Outlook
and didn't know it!)

I have the same error, from 3 libraries, and it has been for 18 hours. I thought it was the library server with the error, but I found that I have no trouble downloading using my desktop. The laptop still won't download the same files, and I followed the instructions above to let the program through the Windows firewall, even though I use McAfee. I suppose that means it is the McAfee firewall? Further ideas? I've spent all day on this.

Solved! Noticed that I really couldn't turn off the McAfee firewall. Contacted McAfee; they uninstalled and reinstalled McAfee Internet Security Suite, and voila, I can download again without error! Thank you, McAfee!!!!

That's GREAT! But too many people don't know that their firewalls/browsers
or anti-virus programs can block other programs from functioning because
there are no error messages that make sense! ADOBE: Write the book on
error messages NOW!!!

Did anyone ever find the definitive solution to this problem? I have downloaded many, many books (probably over 100) and never had a problem until this week. I've done everything suggested on the replies, and still getting the error. This is on my laptop. I finally logged onto our main computer, and everything will download there just fine. Even my IT-type hubby can't figure it out. Really frustrating.

I solved the problem after discovering that the issue was only on my laptop. I tried to turn off the firewall (McAfee) and discovered that the program reported the firewall was ON even after I turned it off. I called McAfee, and they said that this problem can occur if you do a system restore or something that loses their updates. They uninstalled and reinstalled McAfee and the problem with ADE went away.

"Server Communication problem: E_ADEPT_IO" occured after using Digital Editions for many months. Even though FF is my default browser, I had to set internet connection settings from IE. Specifically Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab -> check box for Automatically detect settings. Uncheck other boxes.

This worked for me: deauthorize your computer.
Command+Shift+D for Mac users.
You then can reauthorize. (Optional: create Adobe ID. Not necessary.)
