From what I can tell, I have to click a single object in order to change its color.  I have built objects made up of multiple objects that I group together and when I want to see it in different colors, I have to double click each piece that makes it up separately.  Is this the only way or is there a quicker and easier way?

Hello, if I understood everything correctly you can do that.
1 - apply a material to your object
2 - Select all objects you want to be the same
3 - Selct the eyedropper tool with all objects selected
4 - Clic on the object you want to duplicate the material
5 - All object will have the same and the material linked
6 - change the color of the materail of one object and all object will be changed

What he also could have done was build the design as a template so changes are applied to everything by default
