Mac or Windows, and exactly which version of the operating system?
Also, have you recently installed any operating system upgrades?

I am on Mac and there was a recent Mac OS update. Through several major upgrades and updates, I have never seen this problem.
Someone suggested I deactivate CS5 and re-activate it by entering the serial numbers and this helped.

I have to ask, what would this have to do with it. I purchased this product from Adobe directly. It does what I need it to do and I don't want, or require any additional 'bells or whistles'. In other words I have no desire to 'upgrade' to Adobe 'subscription' model. The only other reason the software shouldn't work would be a lack of compatibility between it and the operating system, or a significant change in hardware systems (think Apple's chip switch). Short of this it would have to do with some collusion between Apple and Adobe. Because Adobe has a functional monopoly of graphics software they ought to be required to provide a non-subscription platform for users who don't see a benefit to purchasing new versions of their software. Adobe's customer service has always been awful, and has only gotten worse over time. One of the supposed 'perks' of their subscription model is better customer service, this sounds like 'pay to play' and amounts to nothing less than extortion. Sell me a worthwhile product. If your release versions later that have value to me, I will purchase them. I don't see anything in the Creative Cloud Suites that appeals to me, it's little more than bloatware with ever dwindling performance.
Now, I'm being barraged with 'non-genuine' software notices. Well, I purchased the software directly from Adobe. So, Adobe, should I report you for piracy? Or is this your latest attempt to extort more money out of me? I haven't tithed recently enough? There will come a day when the people rest control of the government from the corporations and restore competition to the system, providing consumers with real choice, better products, and methods of ownership that we determine. I'd love to hear from Adobe on this one. But you know what, based on their track record of customer service, I will never hear from them.
