Last year I paid monthly for all apps for a year on the student plan. that has now finished but I need indesign for another month. I want to pay for indesign for a month but when I try to it says...

You already have InDesign as part of your Creative Cloud All Apps (Annual plan, paid monthly) subscription.

I've checked that I definitely don't...

if id closes when you click 'get started':

check your account to verify your subscription is what you expect and to verify your adobe id (used in the next step), https://accounts.adobe.com/

if your account shows

a. your subscription is active,

1.  sign out and then back in to your cc desktop application using the same adobe id above to verify your subscription:  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/sign-in-out-creative-cloud-desktop-app.html

2.  if that fails, https://helpx.adobe.com/manage-account/kb/stop-creative-cloud-trial-mode-after-purchase.html

3.  if that fails, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-reverts-to-trial.html

4.  if that fails, using a browser that allows popups and cookies,  contact adobe support during pst business hours by clicking here and, when available, click 'chat', http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/service-ccm.html

if your account shows

b. you have no subscription and you're paying for one

Did you definitely cancel your first plan? Rather than, say, stopping the credit card or failing to give a credit card? If you didn't cancel it, then it will auto renew and is awaiting payment.

=================

According to Adobe's Subscription and Cancellation Terms your annual contract  renews  automatically, on your annual renewal date, until you cancel it.  That goes for student plans as well as regular plans.  So unless you officially canceled your subscription, you're still enrolled in the Student Plan.
