Hi,
I downloaded Dreamweaver CS6 from my Adobe account and started to install it on my new computer. However, the serial number - ie. the one Adobe approved years ago - isn't accepted (claims it to be invalid)... Any hints about?

assuming you're using a valid adobe serial number (6 groups of 4 numbers), you have a mismatch between your installation file and serial number. ie, you can have a valid serial number, but if it's for program A and your installation file is for program B, you will see an invalid serial number message.
common mismatches are language/region (eg, serial number is for western europe and installation file is eastern europe), platform (eg, serial number is for a mac and installation file is win), license type (eg, education vs enterprise vs individual). and one of the most common is using a program installation file with a suite's serial number. eg, using a cs6 suite serial number with a photoshop cs6 installation file. that won't work even though photoshop is included in that suite.
you must use the (correct) suite's installation file (and you can choose to only install one program from the suite). here's official info about that error, http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/error-serial-number-valid-product.html
p.s. if you're convinced your serial number and installation file match, contact adobe support and ask them if they can determine whether your serial number has been invalidated.
there are 3 ways to contact adobe; chat, phone and twitter:
chat:
use a browser that allows popups and cookies
and click here, https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?rghtup=autoOpen
in the chat field (lower right), type AGENT
be patient, it can take quite a while to reach a human.
phone:

twitter:
tweet @AdobeCare
p.s. if you're contacted by anyone (via email or private message), it's much more likely to be a scammer than an adobe representative. ie, double check for an employee badge if contacted in the forums and look for an adobe.com domain in the email address if you click reply to an email. then check again and be very suspicious. any other method of contacting (or offering to contact you) is almost certainly a scam, https://community.adobe.com/t5/using-the-community-discussions/staying-safe-in-the-adobe-support-com...

If you didn't purchase it directly from Adobe, this might be the issue:

and

Some versions of Adobe software have been illegally sold, and it sometime takes a while for Adobe to detect it.

From whom did you purchase CS6? If purchased from a 3rd party vendor, your recourse if any would be with the vendor who sold it to you.
If you purchased directly from Adobe & registered the software, a record of your serial number(s) will show in your online account below. If this is an upgrade version, you will need the qualifying product's serial number, too.

Hi,
many thanks for all the responses! I will need to check the language issue. I purchased CS6 and Dreamweaver CS6 from an authorized Adobe seller - I have all the genuine boxes and disks. However, I didn't try to install from disk but instead downloaded from my Adobe account, and used the serial given when registered. Funnily CS6 did install ok but DW not.

if everything installed and activated except dreamweaver, there's probably a compatibility issue with your computer. ie, it's not a serial number or installation file problem.

Maybe Dreamweaver was purchased separately. It was 10+ years ago but if I remember correctly, DW was not part of CS6 Design Standard. It came only with Design & Web Premium. Or as a stand alone software.
The sad part is that most of those web apps are totally useless today. Flash is gone and the web has changed too much. If you want to build web sites for modern devices, you really need a current code editor that understands HTML5, CSS3 and EC6 JavaScript code.
