Adobe programs need to be installed using installation files, they cannot be transferred between machines.

Uninstall then use the cleaner tool before downloading and installing the program.

Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool

The cleaner removes a standalone installation of Reader or Acrobat, including any preferences and settings that may be preserved during a standard program uninstall

Ned,

After much teeth gnashing  I finally got your email and followed the above steps.  My Acrobat XI  Pro is now working properly as is Acrobat Reader XI.  Thanks very much for your guidance.  I got into trouble  trusting PC Mover to handle the transfer from my old computer to my new HP laptop.

I used the PC Mover help and HP help to try and solve my dilemma, but they didn't have the knowledge that you have.  Perhaps Adobe could enlighten these other support resources to help others in my position to get the help they need more directly.  Or,more simply, provide direct guidance through the web without requiring entry to a an Adobe forum.

Thanks, Bob
