I have purchased a 2nd hand copy of indesign4 and installing it onto my Mac is proving troublesome.
When it asks for the serial key it tells me it is invalid. I have checked over and over and it is correctly copied from the back of the case. The previous owner has transferred the licence to me so activation is not the issue.
Any ideas? I have looked all through the forums but no-one really seems to have an answer and I can't get in contact with support.
John, is correct. You can only install InDesign CS4 on a Mac computer. It will also only be possible if you locate a previous qualifying full version of InDesign. Only an upgrade license is currently registered under the account.

Are you trying to install to a compatible Mac OS? It won't run on current versions or current Macs.

It’s a brand new Mac. Why doesn’t it run on the newer systems?

Antoinettet2857837, the only CS4 InDesign serial number registered under your account is for an upgrade version of InDesign. You can find details on how to locate your registered serial numbers at Find your serial number .
If you locate your original full version serial number, hopefully, acquired in your recent purchase of InDesign CS4, then you will need to use the workaround listed in Installing Creative Suite on macOS 10.12 (Sierra) to install InDesign CS4 on macOS 10.12 or later.

Jeff, I have an older version of CS4 for windows. Can I use this serial number or does it have to be for a Mac OS?

in addition to the former hints: you should have a look at Adobe's database, to see what's stored/saved about your accounts. Here you will find general infos about your Adobe Account https://accounts.adobe.com/>>> see My productsView all >>> These registered products are associated with your Adobe ID. >>> Name >>> Serial number.
And to find your serial number have a look there http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html >>> I lost my serial number >> see comment
The last time Adobe suggests so too this https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?step=ZNA_downloading-installing-setting-up_licensing-activation.

Actually I thought these people from Adobe could help you in https://helpx.adobe.com/contact/support.html.
Click through 'till you arrive at "chat". If "open" (there are opening hours) please use it, I for my part had the best experiences. I quote from Adobe's employee Preran: The chat button is activated as soon as there is an agent available to help.
If it's not working for you, you could search for Adobe's staff members, by writing them a personal message. I got to know them as very helpful. They can often help better than we, we the users like you, some of them have real possibilities for intervention. Please have a look in the forum to persons with this icon under their avatar:
