Unable to install Reader X (10.1.1) on iMac running OS X 10.6.8

I'm able to download the Reader X dmg file just fine.  All goes well right up until the end of the installation process, when I get the following (see screenshot).

Further, a correct-looking app icon then appears in my Applications folder, but when I try to launch it, it crashes immediately.  The following appears in the console:

([0x0-0x49049].com.adobe.Reader[706]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Adobe Reader.app/Contents/MacOS/AdobeReader", ...): Permission denied

That was the first thing I read.  No it didn't help.  I downloaded via Firefox, and also via Safari.  The installer result was the same afterward.
