Can Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 function with the Windows Pro 11 operating system?

Jun 10, 2024 Jun 10, 2024

@migos:
Can Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 function with the Windows Pro 11 operating system?   So far I keep trying to tweak the settings in order to figure out why I keep getting this message whenever I attempt to upload a website page modification:

"An FTP error occurred. Cannot make connection to host. The remote
host cannot be found."

As background, I still use the same webhost that I've used for nearly 2 decades.   But I switched computers and uploaded Dreamweaver CS6 to it.   Meanwhile last December Microsoft uploaded Windows 11 Pro onto my computer, you know, for my own benefit.   I had not yet begun trying to use Dreamweaver CS6 on my replacement computer.

If anyone here has managed to get CS5 or CS6 Adobe to function on Windows 11 Pro, please let me know so I won't give up and switch website modification brands.   I spent over $1,000 on Dreamweaver over the years and I don't need it enough to justify paying $22 monthly for "upgrades".    Any thoughts, please?    Hopefully I've simply neglected to make a setting adjustment in Dreamweaver CS6.   An FTP issue seems like it can be remedied pootentially easily, but I continue rowing with just one oar in the water.  🙂

CS5 technology is so old it may not be compatible with newer servers. That's the risk you take with legacy software.

Make sure you're uploading to the correct ROOT directory on your server. Most hosting plans use public_html/ or some other designation. ROOT varies by hosting plan.

Then hit the TEST button to confirm you can reach the server.  If that fails, click on MORE OPTIONS.

I agree that $22/mo may be excessive as DW is in minimal maintenance mode so looking at alternatives may be worthwhile. Your error though has nothing to do with Windows 11. If the host cannot be found this is an issue with your FTP connection details in your site definition. First step is to reach out to your host to confirm connection details for FTP.

You can test if it's a credentials issue by downloading the free Filezilla Client and trying to upload from there. If you get the same error, it's likely your hosting company updated your server and lost your credentials. It happens fairly often with shared hosting environments, especially with companies like GoDaddy.

  • CS6 was never tested on modern operating systems.
  • 14 year old software might work or it might not.
  • That's assuming you can still activate it.  A number of users have reported they can't because they exceeded their activation limit.
  • Neither Adobe nor this user-to-user community can help you with an exceeded activation count.

There are modern tools you can use instead of CS6.

Ben, Jon and Nancy:

Thanks so much for the feedback.   Personally I have very simple web-publishing needs.   I simply seek to create html pages, and post text and .gif or .jpeg images into them.    I have a shared webhosting account already.   Dreamweaver CS6 hasn't been cooperating on my new Dell desktop computer, perhaps because I have Windows 11 now.   But it doesn't ask me for a registration #, so activation seemingly isn't a problem.

In light of the abovementioned, perhaps some of the following kindly recommended by Nancy are more useful than others.   Free's a great price, LOL.   🙂    But a free editor that messes up my website isn't what I seek.     Any recommendations by anyone reading this would be appreciated.   🙂

The editors cannot themselves mess up your website. HTML and CSS are simply text. I would say the best place to start is to look at what you are maintaining today and make recommendations from there. It may be worth looking at a code editor, but if you are not comfortable editing code, then Visual Studio Code may not be for you and based on what you are trying to achieve other options may be better for you. Are you able to share a link of your site today?

I am elated to report that Dreamweaver CS6 is now finally working with my Windows 11 software and relatively newer (refurbished) desktop computer.   It SEEMS that I missed a letter in the name server that I'd typed into Dreamweaver on my computer.   When I saw it, I was all but certain it wouldn't make any difference...just like my other tweaks and adjustments didn't.   But then, lo & behold, voila!  🙂

Ben, I can assure you and super-Nancy that I'd probably not have had the confidence or corresponding drive to sift through everything that could possibly be done wrong by me like I've finally finished doing, if it hadn't been for you  persuading me that the community still backs me with intelligent and supportive feedback.

Jon, I appreciate you too.   Would you believe that Filezilla downloads to my computer, but won't install?   It takes forever just saying something like this will take a moment.   After an hour of patiently waiting, well, I move on in life.   Fortunately I no longer need to test with FTP.

That said, I humbly apologize for my basic error.   I sincerely request your forgiveness, while reiterating my heartfelt gratitude.   I've been using Dreamweaver for well over a decade and I did not want to (or have time presently to) learn a new software.  I also can't presently afford an Adobe subscription.   But you all have enabled me to continue my focus on Adobe software for future needs.   I hope Adobe appreciates you like you deserve.   🙂

A little in advance, happy 4th of July to those who celebrate it!  🙂   & !muchas gracias por todo, amigos!

Whichever editor you decide to use will require some basic coding skills. Start with links below.

Read chapters & do code exercises:

Hello to all, especially Nancy.  🙂

Well, my computer passed away.  I've set Dreamweaver CS5 up on my replacement computer.  Or maybe it is CS6, but I doubt it since downloading it from Dreamweaver's servers is apparently no longer possible (?).   Fortunately for CS4 & CS5, I kept my DVDs though.  Dreamweaver never sent me one for CS6, however, as I had to purchase a download.

That said, according to my webhosting service:   Dreamweaver is properly connecting with the host's server, via my replacement computer.  However, according to my hosting service, it does not appear that my server-based (i.e. hosted) files are visible to Dreamweaver.    In other words, according to my webhost:  It looks like the settings are correct and meanwhile their logs are showing a valid login by Dreamweaver.   But editing pages is no longer possible.   Hopefully there's hope though.  I've been an avid Dreamweaver client for over a decade.    Anyhow enjoy your weekend and what's left of this beautiful Autumn season.

Nobody edits pages directly on the server.  You need to GET your site folder & files onto your local hard drive first.

Were you able to copy the site folder & files from your old computer to the new one via an external backup or USB drive?

Then tell DW where to find it.

Hi Nancy.   Thanks for the reply.   I believe that I successfully transferred the sites' contents to my new hard drive, weeks ago.   But changes that I make on the site on my hard drive do not transfer to the server via Dreamweaver, although a protracted delay results for maybe 30 seconds each time that I try. before learning the disappointing news   I continue persevering but perhaps the fact that I'm presently with CS5 explains the problem, since the sites were made in CS6.

As for updating to CS6 again after all these years, it reportedly requires CS5.5.   I have CS5 on hard drive (because I have the disks) but I do not have CS5.5.   So I have been trying to upload CS5.5 and also a CS6 "trial" but there have been challenges with both.   I continue persevering.  Meanwhile have a refreshing weekend.  🙂

If you purchased CS6 from Adobe, the download link & serial number should be in your online account. Log-in below.

I wonder if I could simply function with CS5 (instead of CS5.5 or CS6).   All I do is upload text and links and an occasional image.   But the sites have been modified with CS6 in the past.
