Database encoding

Hi,
Can anyone tell me why when I enter a '£' symbol in my databAse it returns
£4,000?
There are other anomolies I am finding also. They return after an update.
The encoding on the page & database is UTF-8

nevermind. started with new insert & update pages and all is well.
