Work through the lessons once, twice or more to get comfortable with the concepts and coding.

Create some practice files to work with by going to File > New > New Document (select type) > Hit Create button.

When you are able to create code manually without referring to the textbook, you're ready to move on to real projects.

instead of compressing small image, run from the original... not optimised images... that is the rule of pattern compression.. tha algorythm know how to optimise from big images... not from al ready small...

say it differently... take your original PSD work from there in a non destructive format ... A.PNG... now optimise for the web say A.JPG in PSD... see the weight... and now from A.PNG optimise from TINY... you'll see...

trying to gain something on a tiny compressed files want never get any result... but that is a rules for any compressor... compress a ZIP from JPG... compress a GZIP apache on JPG... you will never win anything...

PNGs - I dont use them for web images. Infact I can't say I've used a png file for anything that I can remember recently and that is where the most weight reduction advantage seems to lie with tinypng.com, (hence its name I guess, althougfh it does mention jpgs) Since pngs are not a workflow I use its not really something that is of a concern to me.

Bootstrap, jQuery ???? why are you always referring to something else that what we are talking about... ?

just FYI... I don't use BS... and don't find any interest in using it... I'm based on susy Susy: Your Layout, Our Math | OddBird ... now free to everyone to use it... it doesn't bother me so much...

Previously, I was talking about OOP, you talk about PHP... and I'm node, Mongo, Javascript based... ...

I mentioned it because you seem to be concerned about the weight of a file, well show me a website that doesnt use jquery or bootstrap or some other javascript plugin or framework that is highly toxic in weight.

As for a png, no - they dont fit into my workflow so I have no interest in what weight they are to be honest.

WP as you said is another piece of bloated code junk... I agree...

well, now, how much are you billing to your client a web site, having an easly maintainable content from his own office, getting a RWD layout, having all the need tools for social network ready, comment from it's client and so on ?...

I'm just curious ?

here some of my client knock the door and say, we would like with you, we heard about your way of working, but we have that budget , is it possible to have something usefull for us ?...

beside it, and luckely for my own Ego of developper I have some clients that allow me budget for their intenal application, where I can have fun on developping...

I dont really work like you. I know what I'm capable of and if the clients demands doesnt fit in with what I'm capable of I dont to do the job because usually to get into something you know nothing about, purely to chase money or in desperation of money, ends in disaster or a lot of stress. I don't need either, maybe I'm lucky.

Most of the websites I do have a bespoke back-end written in php where the client can change specific areas of the website. ie products, client comments, update careers, case studies, news etc. Whilst this does take longer to implement than say an out of a box solution like Wordpress, October CMS, Joomla etc I end with a dummy proof CMS, which a 3 year old kid could use. Its almost impossible to go wrong as everything is locked down and hugley simple to use, hugley simple. I think that is what my client/s want, something simple, not something like Wordpress which would scare the crap out of them to be honest. I'm dealing with some clients that struggle to remember their know their own name so simplicity IS essential in my opinion. I try and deliver that.

I gave you the answer and some advice to your question in post 3. From then on other contributors chose to take the thread off-subject, I was just replying to them, so blame them not me....

It was 'tongue in cheek' - we are all in it together...

I know some of these threads get side-tracked but often there are some very interesting points of view and information which can be picked up regardless whether one thinks it concerns them or not.

Being interested in what you are actually doing, especailly if you know very little, is how you become more aware, so I make no apologise for people who can't be bothered..

Well I hope one way or another someone was able to provide you with some positive information that will help you make a decision. If not, post again and I'm sure the regulars will be more than willing to provide some more assistance.

I didn't knew the "tongue in cheek"... well I still don't get it... but I figure out.

that it is true that the OT ask a question, and one should focus only to answer to that question... and open a parallel thread if one need to skid on another subject... yes... but in real life, one are all busy in our daily task... and one subject often drives to an other... and as far as the main global subject is about web site management... I completly agree with you... that it always brings grain to grind that can very often have a great interest in the general flow of work ...

exchanging contrary opinions is an extreme wealth that we must preserve to build a real objectivity of thought

Hi Again Nancy,

RE; DW CC 'Classroom in a book' (2017 release)

Can you please clarify what seem like inconsistencies in the book and online version, the narrator distinctly says (page 150, item 7)

quote = type .row(space).nav.navbar-nav(space)>(space)li(space)>(space)a

But on the screen shots of both the book and the online images there are no spaces, as with the screen shot at the the bottom of page 151. The mouse over shows the above code without spaces.

The narrator makes a point of asking to check there are no spaces. (although some are needed)

So how much of a difference will spaces make as I am having a few issues with styling the nav bar?

Thank you

Steve

If the construction is

<!doctype html>

<html>

<head>

<meta charset="utf-8">

<title>Untitled Document</title>

</head>

<body>

<div class="row">

     <nav class="nav navbar-nav">

          <ul>

               <li>

                    <a href="#">Home</a>

                    <a href="#">About</a>

                    <a href="#">Products</a>

                    <a href="#">Contact</a>

               </li>

          </ul>

     </nav>

</div>

</body>

</html>

Then, if you want to target the anchor element, the selector would read

.row .nav.navbar-nav ul li a

The best way to remember if a space is required:

- if the classes/ID's are within the same element ("nav navbar-nav") do not use a space. If the classes are within another element then a space is required.

Hi Nancy,

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Reading all the banter between your colleagues is all this over my head.

DW is the only Adobe program I have a difficult time with but it is far more involved than the others.

I think I am better moving to Templates, maybe you can recommend something? I am of an age where I have not the time to fully learn code. The Bootstraps seemed like the best for me wanting an up to date responsive wed site format, but in particular the CSS designer is proving difficult to manipulate.

I keep hearing and reading from the tutorials ‘Dreamweaver makes it easy to.....’ sorry but I don’t !

Regards

Steve

by the way...

I have nothing to proove... nor defend... nor protect... ... this thread start just because someone say... "Oh well something else 99% of developers don't need to get involved in"... and I answer... "I don't think that because that you don't use it, means that developers don't need it"...

and I never say... no where... that this way or that one is bad...  or wrong... or negative...

I just try to open mind to something else or different...

it strange that most of the feedback try to reduce what I propose... I just propose it... free to you to use it ... or not... but others folks around here can have a different vision...
