DW error message: Before using this feature you must define a testing server....

Been uploading files to my server with no problems for 5 years when suddenly I get this message which blocks all uploads. As far as I know I have never had or used a 'testing server'? Your help is solving this would be most appreciated.

are you sur that by inadvertance you have swapped to testing file from the ftp client ?

Good chance that's what it is, but how do I reconnect to ftp client?  I have DW CS6 and can't find the image file controls in screen shot you sent me.

Expand your Files Panel and ensure you're connecting to Remote server and not the Testing server.

How do I 'expand Files Panel'?

I'm obviously not very technical so I really find some of the comments more confusing than helpful. For example, where am I supposed to check for the Doc types listed in #32.?  I need step-by-step instructions on how to unblock my inability to upload changes to my sites.  Nancy & B i r n o u seems to have been offering the best comments so far that I can follow.  Could you two work this out and offer a solution. If you need more specific information from me, a step by step explanation with no technical jargon would work best with me. 

There are also conversations going on here that do not address my issue.  I've never used an Adobe forum before, but I'm shocked at the way it works or doesn't work. I do appreciate your help and realize that although I've been doing successful html based sites for over 20 years, I've always depended on website generators like DW to get it done. I have no coding experience and have never moved beyond simple html since 1997.

Therein lies the problem.   DW assumes you have coding skills and a good understanding of native web technologies -- HTML, CSS, JavaScript, FTP, etc...

so just to place everything flat...  can you confirm that

• you have no testing server set at all... check on web site mangement > server
• you have a remote server set
• on your client FTP the remote server is pushed
• you work on HTML file
• when you press ctrl (cmd) + shift + U that should directly put the file

You are not supplying enough information for us to work on, that is why there are so many guesses which according to you have only confused you.

There are a number of reasons why problems occurs

• the cache file is corrupted
• there has been an update in the operating system
• a setting within Dreamweaver has been changed
• a bug/virus has crept into the system
• etc, etc.

When you say in two different posts that

• the error message says that you must define a testing server and
• an uploaded file remains the same

this points to me that you are trying to upload to the testing server. Previous answers have also pointed in that direction and you should be concentrating on that aspect.

In my view reply #3 is the correct answer to solve your problem. If, as you say, I have DW CS6 and can't find the image file controls in screen shot you sent me. then you should go about finding them. This is done by clicking the Expand to show local and remote sites

and you will find the icons mentioned in reply #3 and #13. It is funny to note reply #14

As for my situation with DW, when I try to upload the single first changed file in this listing, this is what scrolls. I don't know why all these files are uploaded, but what is significant is that the first file reads: 'same -not transferred' and my online file is not modified.

DW checks for dependent files and if those files have not changed since your last PUT operation, they won't be uploaded to your server.

Open theHTML file you want to upload.  Use keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+U to upload that file.  If you're prompted to upload dependent files, hit NO.
