I want to develop a freelance website on dreamweaver with ruby on rails

Hi Adobe community,

I have an idea of a freelance website that I want to develop. I don't have any experience in programming language, I made my research and I found that ruby on rails is an easy and rich programming language to start with.

So, my questions are: does Dreamweaver supports ruby on rails? do you have any recommendation or/and advise you can give me?

Rails is an MVC (model, view, controller) framework based on Ruby code.  

I have used other MVCs for PHP & MySQL in DW -- see links below.

If I remember correctly Rails requires an SQLlite3 database and Ruby installed on your  local testing server.

I think that if you're planning to develop in Ruby, you should get a Ruby and Rails IDE.

I'm not so sure, that Ruby will be more simple to use than Dreamweaver or Muse as an alternative. To obtain for themselves an impression of Ruby, you could have a look at https://www.tutorialspoint.com/ruby-on-rails/rails-introduction.htm and there I quote:

Embedded Ruby

Ruby provides a program called ERB (Embedded Ruby), written by Seki Masatoshi. ERB allows you to put Ruby codes inside an HTML file. ERB reads along, word for word, and then at a certain point, when it encounters a Ruby code embedded in the document, it starts executing the Ruby code. ...

and not to forget:

To develop a web application using Ruby on Rails Framework, you need to install the following software −

    Ruby

    The Rails Framework

    A Web Server

    A Database System

In my eyes, it doesn't sounds very simple.

I found that ruby on rails is an easy and rich programming language to start with.

Ruby is a fine language, but PHP is easier for those with no prior coding experience.

Anything is possible IF you have the right experience and knowledge. DW is just an editor, given to the right person they could code anything with it.

If you need to ask these quesions then you  dont have the experience necessary and although there may be packages and frameworks which could assist you if you have no knowledge of how they work or how to integrate them you dont have the experience.

It sounds like you are wanting to run before you can walk.

I have to resist the urge to laugh when people ask "Is it possible to make a site like  ___________ (insert Facebook, YouTube, Adobe, Amazon, Freelancer, etc...)?"  I don't mean to be disparaging but if you have to ask, you don't have what it takes.

Sites of this caliber are very complex. They are built & maintained by a team of experienced designers, back end & front end programmers, marketing experts and so on.  It's not one person.  It's a whole village of people. 

Right now, you have some pie-in-the-sky ideas but no working knowledge.  You could go to school & take all the necessary degree courses to learn this stuff.   Or you can hire a team of professionals to build & maintain the site for you.   That latter is probably your best option.

This project will require:

• A knowledge of HTML and CSS
• Ability to configure and modify a web server (such as Apache) and a server operating system (such as Linux)
• A solid knowledge of the SQL database query scripting language.
• Knowledge of javascript (and/or jQuery)
• Expert-level knowledge of the programming language of your choice (PHP, Ruby, etc)

A website like Freelancer is highly automated, so the pages are constructed from programming code and database recordsets. To take on a project like this at your skill level is like someone who just bought their first pair of hiking boots booking their trip for Mount Everest.

If you were to go the PHP route, then the book PHP Solutions by Powers would be a good place to start. It includes many small (but useful) projects. Working through that book would give you an idea of what it would take to accomplish the project you have described.

No disrespect meant but I think regulars in the forum, who have been answering posts for years, just get a bit peed off with questions like the ones you have posted, as it should be common sense. If you need to ask basic questions about a website you have seen you most probably are out of your depth to produce such a website.

Most of us (those that have been coding for years) would have a struggle producing some of the sites we commonally get asked 'can DW produce a site like this'.

Seriously you need to have a few years coding experience in all kinds of languages, html, css, javascript, a server side language such as php, to even attempt such a site.

I know there's a lot of stuff you see online that you would like to emulate but a lot are put together by an experienced team, of front-end designers, javascript specialist, php specialist, database management etc etc

It doesn't stop you learning but you may need to lower your expectations initially and build on the knowledge and skills that you will aquire through the process of learning BUT usually it's measured in years, not a few weeks or a few months.

Basic coding skills are not nearly enough, though.   You need expert level coding skills +++++.

You might want to start with some structured learning courses at Lynda.com and see how you do.

Hello amine000,

may I show you "my way" to reach my destination?

Fortunately I could do my first steps with the help of an experienced web designer, who used Dreamweaver. This allowed me to familiarise myself with the functioning of the procedures and to participate. Training and learning by self studying and using these numerous Adobe's tutorials, Nancy O.'s and David Power's many help sites *) AND following the questions in the forum brought me tho this point of knowledge which is ok for ME, just as a normal user, simply introduced to the technologie and then grew with the system. AND this way I love to continue day by day, pleased and inspired of the imagination and creativity of the people represented here!
