Slow typing in DW CS6 / OSX?

Explorer ,
May 09, 2012 May 09, 2012

Is anybody experiencing really slow typing in DW CS6 on a Mac?

Regardless of what I type, the code only apears at a rate of 3 characters per second!  Does anybody know what may be causing this?  Is it an incompatability, a bug, or some rendering issue???

I'm running this on an old MacPro1,1 / NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB with 8GB Ram, SSD drives OSX Lion 10.7.3.

This slow behaviour is not noticed on other CS6 apps...

The purchased product was an upgrade - downloaded from Adobe:

Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium (Mac,English)

Looking forward to a resolution, as it's pretty terrible.

Luis.

If you have installed Dreamweaver CCM update (12.1), you should no longer face this issue. If you have 6.1 update installed and are still facing this problem, let us know. For users that are not on the cloud, Adobe is working towards a release that addresses this issue.

If have Code too, but I feel more comfortable with Dreamweaver. The design view is still useful sometimes (e.g. for imagemaps) but mainly I prefer the codecompletion in DW. Looks like Coda never heard off jQuery for example. Also detecting related files is useful so I can open related script or css files with just one click. I also like the fact that DW works locally and uploads automaticly when needed. Coda works only remote or local. And a staging server function is missing in Coda too. And since I'm a Creative Cloud user and pay for everything anyway I'm sticking to DW for now.

Maybe there are some plugins/addons that would make Coda life easier for me but since I couldn't even find a jQuery plugin I gave up.

ndekruijk I totally hear what you're saying and you make very good points. In actual fact I used DW to create an ImageMap just yesterday.

However, for me the slow typing was a show stopper so I'm not sorry I switched.

I pay for Creative Cloud too so feel a bit robbed by Adobe that they took so long to fix such an important issue and it cost me money to buy a Coda license when I'm already paying them for Creative Cloud. They took their eye off the ball with this and if it wasn't for Photoshop being so brilliant I'd be looking for alternatives for all my other Adobe software too.

Quite what I'll do when the Creative Cloud membership goes up to full price next year I don't know...

Great! Now I'm having an either bigger issue........ sigh.....

When I save a file (cmd-s) the code editor window loses focus. So when I start typing after saving it just selects a file in the Files panel...

Yep I'm having the same issue as ndekruijk.

To be more clear, any kind of keyboard shortcut that puts/gets a file will bring focus to the Files panel (at least that's what I'm noticing).

Hi zetokore / ndekruijk,

Saving the file while working with it should not loose focus from the document in DW.

Could you please provide me with the below details?

1. OS Version

2. Is this not seen before 12.1.0 update to DW?

3. Do you have dual monitor setup?

4. Is Application Frame and Bar on or off?

5. Where you transfering any files when you hit this situation where in the focus is sent to Files Panel?

6. Any specific workspace settings?

Regards,

Janaki L

1. OS X 10.8.2 on a MacBook Pro Retina

2. Never seen it before. But noticed it immediately after updating to 12.1

3. Yes, but running on laptop only it's the same

4. Using Application Frame and/or Bar or disabling them both doesn't matter, just tried it.

5. I'm using 'Automatically upload files to server on Save' in site settings. Disabling that does fix the problem but then I need to upload manualy which is even more annoying.

6. I'm using the standard 'Coder' workspace layout. Tried some of the other presets but didn't help.

So in my opinion auto uploading files changes the focus to files panel and that seems wrong to me.

Sometimes I even have to click the codeview twice because focus will change to files panel immediatly again after clicking codeview.

Also tried removing all files in Application Support/Dreamweaver CS6 folder but that didn't help either

On the bright side: fonts are now retina optimized, yay! (But will go back to 12.0.1 now because it's not workable this way)

1. OS 10.8.2
2. I haven't seen this before the 12.1 update

3. I have three monitors, Dreamweaver is running on the center monitor with a second and third monitor to the left and right

4. Application Frame and Bar are on
5. Transferring files triggers the bug for me every time. I can trigger it as follows:
- bring focus to the source editor (click anywhere within the code)

- click Shift+CMD+U to upload the file I'm working on

- Files panel now has focus.  If I click the "Delete" key on the keyboard, Dreamweaver will ask if I want to delete the file I'm working on (I almost deleting my files all the time now, thank goodness for the delete prompt).

Hi,

yes, I'm getting this too...

CC DW 12.1 build 5949

1. OS Version

OSX 10.7.5

2. Is this not seen before 12.1.0 update to DW?

No

3. Do you have dual monitor setup?

Yes 30" + 19"

4. Is Application Frame and Bar on or off?

not sure what this is - probably not.

5. Where you transfering any files when you hit this situation where in the focus is sent to Files Panel?

It's every time I upload a file with Cmd+Shift+U.

I'm typing in code; I hit the key combo, and the fint blue focus halo moves to the "Files" rather than staying on the current document.  to resume coding, or interact with the current document, I have to click on it to bring the focus back.

This happens in any view: code view / split / design

6. Any specific workspace settings?

nope - I've just reset to Designer, and the problem persists.

I'm having all sorts of typing lag, item selection lag, losing cursor, and things just not updating on screen. I am not seeing the high CPU use others see. It does seem DW only uses one or 2 cores. It is common to see those two cores jumping up to 25 to 50%. Usage drops off quickly.

If I turn off Related Files, DW CS6 (installed version - 12.0 5842 latest currently available via Help-Updates) is useable. But, I am working with WordPress sites so I switch back to CS5.5.

Vista-32 Ultimate fully updated (Service Pack 2 (Build 6002).

nVidia: GeForce GTX 560 Ti Drv 306.23
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU    Q6700

DW 12.0 is basically unusable. I am advising my friends that work with DW CS5 NOT to update. In addition I am now, looking for a better site design tool.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the issue (Files Panel stealing the focus from document window on file transfer) and sharing the details. We could reproduce the issue at our end which you have reported above. Engineering team is working on the issue.

Hi Janaki,

Do you know will Dreamweaver 12.1 be released to those of us who purchased CS6 rather than the Creative Cloud subscription?  The slow typing issue is annoying and slows me down tremendously.

Thanks,

-David

I had thisissue with 12 and still have it with 12.1

I've tried the various solutions posted, but none have helped.

I'm using OS X 10.8.2 and have a dual monitor setup.

You sure you don't have 12.01?  12.1 fixed it for me.

Its 12.0 - 5842

Since Adobe is slow updating the hardcopy buyers I am seriously looking at alternatives for editing and building web sites.

Since the last cloud update clicking between documents takes about 5 seconds and 'find and replace takes an eternity to go through pages also.

  • Windows 7 Pro, SP1, 64-bit
  • DW CS6, v 12.0, build 5861
  • 3.6GHz Xenon, 16GB RAM
  • Kingston SVP200 SSD 240GB, 113GB free

I get this slowness problem but only when editing text with more than 500 or so Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese characters.  The more characters I have, the longer it lags.  Typically I work with docs that have 2000 or more characters.  The CPU never goes higher than 13% when it hangs.  I have this problem when adding tags, copying, pasting, just basic things. I get spinning blue circle, somtimes fades to white, no less than 8 sec each time.  I have no problem with docs that have Lantin-only text.  Working in UTF-8, no character encoding declaration (using DW to edit and then copy and paste into a CMS).
