Flash 10 install issues and use with PowerPoint

New Here ,
Nov 18, 2009 Nov 18, 2009

Hi feeling really frustrated now and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a quick solution.

I'm running Windows 7, Flash 10.0.32.18 (now the Beta 10.1 in desperation) and I haven't had to reinstall flash on start up until last night so that was an unfortunate down turn of events for me and not even the reason for searching the forums.

My issue started as I stood in front of one of my classes (I work in a College) with PowerPoint 2007 and a lesson ready to go and the Flash images that had always worked refused to be anything other than a still image with no interaction.

Unfortunately when I upgraded to Windows 7 I carried out a clean install and reinstalled Office along with the latest versions of Flash, Shockwave etc. I say unfortunately because I now have no way of knowing where the problem lie. On asking, Microsoft are adamant that it is an Adobe issue and the forum would seem to back this up.

On investigation I found that when looking at a slide the object was identified as a Flash object but I can't view any properties, also 'insert a shockwave flash object' is not available in the control toolbox. This would indicate that Flash is not installed even though viewing flash on the internet has not been an issue.

The last issue that may help toward a solution is that when trying to view an .swf file I'm informed that I need to have FlashPlayer installed (I have) and when trying to use a third party flash player such as SWF Opener it also asks me to install flash.

Like everyone else here I've installed, uninstalled all Flash etc. more times than I care to remember now.

I'm not that technically minded when it comes to the nitty gritty of software operation and programming, I just like things to work.

Please help as the most important thing I use my laptop for I now can't!!!!

To gm377 con't from previous post

Summary: The Installation from the Adobe download site installs Flash Player 10ActiveX AND the Shockwave Flash Object

I think the Stand Alone Version of the Installer installs ONLY the Flash Player, NOT the Shockwave Flash Object

That is why #1 in the post previous to this one is correct. The Shockwave Flash Object (plug-in is being asked for)

And that is what youtube is asking for, even tho they say "Flash Player",

Hi dreams44, well we'll see where we end up with this.

Sorry about the link on the previous post, if you've read all these you'll know I'm new to using this and I thought I'd taken it off as it won't be of any use.

I've checked the other links that have been posted and these all relate to PPT 2003 and previous, which won't make a lot of sense if you're using PPT 2007. I'll be the first to admit that I struggled to get my head around the new layout of 2007, especially as all the PC's at work are still using Office XP!!

I'm not sure of your experience with PPT or using Flash within and I'll apologise if I'm trying to teach you to suck eggs. I didn't recognise what you were trying to do with one of your early posts so I'll start with what I do. The first thing you need to do is turn on the developer tab. Click the office button, top left, click on the PowerPoint options button and check the box that says 'Show the Developer tab in ribbon', this will give you access to the control toolbox.

Now click on the developer tab, top right, and you'll see the control section. You need to click on the button which is the crossed hammer and spanner. This will bring up a 'more controls' dialog menu. Now we'll find out is Flash is installed correctly! Scroll down the list to Shockwave Flash object, if it's not there it's back to you eidnolb

I'll assume it is there so click on it, click ok. Now draw a box on your slide, it'll be white with a cross through it, not very Flashy

Now right click on the box and click properties, this'll bring up yet another dialogue box. In the Movie section type the path to the file where your Flash file is e.g. c:\flash\flashfile.swf (where c is the drive) and it's really important to have .swf on the end.

Now move up to the EmbedMovie and change this to True from the default False, this means you won't need the Flash file any more when you move the PPT file about.

Now all being well it'll now work if it doesn't let us know and we'll go from there.

Good luck, gm377

PS a note to eidnolb, I'm intrigued how you got the genders mixed with 3 people. I was only aware of 2 genders and I wondered if you could elaborate!!!

Hey gm377 ......good directions even though it all sounds greek to me:-) I had to work tonight so just getting back home.

I'm sure this will be helpful to dreams44, nice of you to help. Of course it will work and of course Shockwave Flash object will be there

LOL on that last comment of yours. We had a thread that started out by one person and as it went along, 3 more people

came on board. I was helping the first one and one of the others. Well, between the back and forth from myself to both of them, they both started talking with each other. Each had similar problems, but for different reasons. One had FP & SWO installed, the other could not get an uninstall done and therefore could not have a successful install. This latter one I instructed to uninstall/reinstall. Well the other one did the same thing, but didn't need to!!! I referred to one as a she and

"she" was a he and reminded the real she of that fact. It was sort of funny but as I think back, I did get one correct:-)

Oh, I hear MS is working on IE9. Does that mean something is wrong with IE8?????? Ha-Ha  Also Google is still saying they

are going to stop supporting IE6 soon and I better hurry up and get FF or IE8(no IE7?) or of course there is always Chrome. LOL Well they are going to miss me and they will be sorry! 🙂

Well, I'll be awaiting dreams44's report.

Thanks gm377

http://C:\Documents and Settings\stapjoan\My Documents\Fluid Air\Website\basic fb.swfI did what you said and nothing happened. went to properties, put into the movie section the path and changed the embedmovie to true. No luck , its got to be something simply. I just don't know what. Nothing happened, very frustrating.

Hi dreams44, it may be something simple as you suggest. Are you having any problem with Flash Player, viewing websites, etc? I know you are busy with this pp, but it may be FP related.

What OS/browser are you running?

Is "Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX" listed in your Add/Remove?

If you are using IE, in Manage Add ons, you should have listed the following: Shockwave Flash Object.....ActiveX....

Flash10c.ocx (if you have FP 10.0.32.18 installed) and it should be Enabled; mine also lists the vs(yours may not)

Check C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash     Look to see if in the Flash Folder that FlashUtil10c.ocx and Flash10c.ocx is listed.  Checking properties in each you can see the version #.

These are the 3 that must be installed so I thought I'd list those. It may be worth checking, just a suggestion.

Thanks dreams44

Hi dreams44, Ok go to the Flash folder and right click on Flash10b and remove that. You have Flash10d and that indicates that you have installed the latest update which is FP 10.0.42.34. That is how Flash10d was installed into your Flash folder.

After you remove 10b, reboot so to be sure it is removed. Only 10d and FlashUtil10d.exe should be listed.

Not in IE, manage add ons, you want to see what I told you except it must be Flash10d.ocx and enabled.

Perhaps that has been your problem, the websites are working off of the old version of Flash.

See if this solves things for you; hope so.

Glad you checked this out.

I do have shockwave flash object , I did put in the crosshair, I right clicked to get the properties and the directions say choose custom, there is no custom button. I will proceed with your directions to see if that works on the movie section. Thanks will update you later.

By the way I am a female.

Wow this is a lot of information, I will go back and see if everything you say I need is installed, Java, Shockwave, Flashplayer10Active X you would think it would be easier than this. I just got a new system and new software so I will try everything again to see if it works. Thanks

Hi dreams44, Sometimes a solution is simple and othertimes it isn't:-) Very few one solution fits all, too many variables.

Feel free to post back since your particular issue may have a difference in programs or add ons, etc.

Thanks
