Flash Player 9 won't install on Mac OSX(PC)

New Here ,
May 11, 2007 May 11, 2007
I got a prompt on a website saying that I needed to download FlashPlayer 9 and plug-in. I downloaded the installer and tried to install the application. When I get the test page I also get the same prompt telling me I need the plug-in and taking me back to the page where you download the installer. In other words, I'm going in circles. Something is preventing the application from installing. And most web pages have cube questionmark icons where I should be viewing flash content.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Have run into the same issue... it's a vicious circle. Install. Test the player. "Error with the plugin, please reinstall player". Uninstall. Reinstall player. Test the player. "Error with the plugin. Go here to reinstall player." Uninstall. Reinstall player. Test the player. "Error with the plugin. Go here to reinstall player." I received an email reply, but it did not address the issue directly. Stuck, stuck, stuck. The error prompt reads, "Safari cannot find the Internet plug-in. The page "Macromedia - Flash Player" has content of MIME type "application/x-shockwave-flash", but you doin't have a plug-in installed for this MIME tyoe. A plug-in should be available on this page..." Then it sends me back to the download page, again. Are you getting the same message?

I'm having the exact same problem. I even tried installing the latest version of Firefox and Safari. Doesn't do anything. :( And my plug-ins folder doesn't have any Flash plug-ins listed in it.

I'm updating the necessary technote now, so I have some steps handy..

1. Delete the following files (or the entire folder):
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player Enabler.plugin
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player.plugin
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/flashplayer.xpt

2. Reinstall Flash Player 9.

This may be enough to resolve the problem. However, it may lead to a slightly different problem. If you receive an error message when running the Flash Player 9 installer read "Flash Player 9 installation fails on Macintosh" ( http://www.adobe.com/go/4aa64290)...

OK next step..

Would each of you kindly check permissions on this folder and post them here:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins

You can either find the folder and do "Get Info", then expand "Ownership & Permissions"..
What you should see is the Owner having Read & Write access, the Group having Read & Write access, and the "Others" being read only (numerically that would be 775).

Or if you're comfy in Terminal, do this:
cd /Library
ls -l
And write down the line for the Internet Plug-Ins folder..
(learn more at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106712)

Permissions on this folder -should- be 775. What you should see if 'drwxrwxr-x'

Finally, do this and tell me what happens:
1. Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
2. CAREFULLY type the following line, exactly as you see it here (there is a space after cd):
cd /Volumes/"Adobe Flash Player 9"/"Install Flash Player 9 UB.app"/Contents/MacOS

3. CAREFULLY type the following line (there is a space after sudo):
sudo "./Install Flash Player 9 UB"

4. This should start and run the Flash Player 9 UB installer as root (that's what sudo does...) Let me know what happens.

When I do "Get Info" on this folder, in the Ownership and Permissions area it only says "You can: Read and Write" (I only have one account on my computer)

I'm not really comfortable working in Terminal (I never have before).. are there any other alternatives?

Oh oh oh! I finally got it to work! Here's what you should try:

Go to your Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities). Select your start up volume on the left and click the "first aid" tab. From there click the "repair disk permissions" button. Then re-install Flash Player.

That fixed it for me.

Trying to follow instructions to install Flash 9 but when I go to 'repair disk permissions' all I get is "DISK UTILITY INTERNAL ERROR
Disk utility has lost its connection with the disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility" I have tried running Disk Utility from the install disk and get the same error. Any ideas.
Redrooster!

So now the flash player will not stay installed.
If you restart the computer or sleect a new browser or just restart the same browxer flash is gone... it will reinstall but it won;t stay...
What a crappy product... I thought we were making progress... this is like the old days with a 286 computer and crashes happened every 10 minutes...

Hi, I'm new to Macs and apparently a complete idiot. I'm in Applications/Utilities.

"Select your start up volume on the left and click the "first aid" tab. From there click the "repair disk permissions" button. Then re-install Flash Player."

That's where I get lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
