Flashplayer won't install on Windows XP running IE8

New Here ,
Dec 15, 2009 Dec 15, 2009

I have tried to download flashplayer and it fails.  I have followed the steps for trouble shooting on Adobe but no luck.  I have PC Defender (F-Secure) as my antivirus and firewall.  Any suggestions?

Hi gobabygo41, well it appears you did a good job following the instructions. Your last post said you have it all fixed.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post back.

Glad you solved your problem, I understand it isn't easy sometimes.

Hi gbg, Well if you would like to list all of your add ons, I can take a look at them. Some are compatible with each other and FP and some do conflict. One way that you can do it and I have had to do this on my own computer, is of course you want Shockwave Flash Object enabled(otherwise FP won't work) and Java. With Java there are a couple of add ons that are known to conflict with some users. Then say you have 10 more, you enable one at a time and if it causes a problem, you disable it. That is time consuming I know. However if you enable all of them at once, then you won't know which one is causing a problem if there is a conflict.

If you list them for me I can at least narrow the list for you so you won't have so many to test.

Thanks

Hi gbg, sorry it didn't come through. If you have written them down, you can just type them right here. Like, Shockwave

Flash Object.....ActiveX......Flash10d.ocx......Enabled and so on. No problem with that.

On Java, include the version number if you have it. There are two versions that have caused some users problems here as well as on other forums.

Thanks

Hi eidnolb,

I am having similar problems installing the new Flash Player and tried to follow your directions of December 21 (post 19).

Unfortunately, there is a file FlashUtil10b in the folder Flash, which the "uninstall" utility does not seem to be able to get rid of. Tried deleting it manually, but the system does not let me delete it even though I am the administrator on the account. (had deleted the earlier version of the Flash program a few days back using the standard "add or remove programs" option on the Control Panel: that may or may not have anything to do with it).

Have tried changing the file name as well as changed the "Flash" folder name to "Flashold" before installing the new version. I get the message that the program has been successfully installed and there is a new "Flash" folder with the new files. But, still when I try to use the Flashplayer, the program can't be found. Also, the program is listed in the programs on the computer, but unlike other programs, there is no size listed for this program.

Will appreciate any suggestions, you or any one else may have.

Thanks.

Hi ak, Sometimes the Flash Player 10 ActiveX will show up in Add/Remove & the ActiveX fails. Since FlashUtil10b is in your Flash folder, I doubt if in Tools>Manage add ons you would have Shockwave Flash Object...ActiveX...Enabled...Flash10d.ocx. You can check but I'm sure Flash10b.ocx would be listed.

The websites are most likely asking for FP vs. 10.0.42.34 since most of the large ones like youtube, etal had advance notice that Adobe was updating.

Which version of FP were you Uninstalling? vs 10.0.32.18?  Most likely you will have to Uninstall/Install again. I'm assuming you are using XP/IE8, if different let me know. IE7 and IE8 have user/administrative restrictions built in and

are causing difficulties.

Please list everything that is in the Flash folder.

Thanks

Hi Eidnolb,

Thanks for your fast response and willingness to help me. I am a novice in these things and can use all the help I can get.

In answer to your questions, I am definitely using XP and IE8.

The Tools>Manage add ons list "Shockwave Flash object" version 8.0.22.0, created on 11/2/2009, 4:24 PM. This is the same date and time as on the file Flash10d.ocx in folder Flash on Macromed. The only other adobe add-on item listed relates to the PDF Reader link helper.

Right now, the only files listed under Flash are Flash10d.ocx, Flashutil10d (version 10.0.42.34), Install, and uninstall_activex. All of these files were downloaded and the folder 'Flash" created with them today, after I renamed the old "Flash" folder with the undeletable file as "Flashold". The file which the uninstall utility as well as I could not delete manually was Flash10b (version 10.0.22.87).

Also, as I mentioned earlier, I had presumably deleted the earlier version of Flashplayer using the "add or remove programs" option on the control panel (couple of days back before I tried to load the new version). Part of my problem may or may not be because of that.

Hi, You do have what you should have in the Flash folder. The problem is the Shockwave Flash Object, I have no clue

how vs 8.0.22.0 or why it is there.  That is an old old version.

Since you have the correct files in the Flash folder, you should have listed in the Add/Remove Flash Player 10 ActiveX also. You can check if you like, but I'm sure it is there.

Now if you were using IE6, you could remove that SWO vs 8 in add ons.:-)  I have found the best bit of information for all of these issues about Users/Administrators, that IE7 and IE8 has been causing everyone. And this has to do with you also, since you could not delete those 2 files in the Flash folder, even though you said you are the Administrator.

Go to where your clock is in the system tray(bottom right) and right click on it; a window will open up, left click on "adjust

date/time" If a clock appears you are running as Administrator, if not you get a message.

I need to get a link for you to see if we can get the Shockwave Flash Object...Flash10d.ocx into the add ons and get rid of the vs 8.0.22.0.

Be back in a few

This is for akt0001, Following is the link you will go to: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html

1. Before you go to that link, go to Tools, Internet Options, click on the Tab marked Security at the top, you want the Security Level for this Zone to be set at Medium, if it isn't adjust the slider so it is.

Go to the article from the link and page down to item #5. The third paragraph, click on the Internet for Windows Only and SAVE it to you desktop. Before you do that read the short paragraph immediately below,...."Save this installer.......

Close all browser windows, then RUN the Installer from your desktop and Reboot. Go to Tools>Manage add ons and check if Shockwave Flash Object is Flash10d.ocx.

Thanks

Hi Eidnolb,

Thanks again for your help.

Tried the approach suggested by you and everything seems to be loaded fine except that the system still does not think that I have installed Flashplayer. (when I try to open some files requiring the Flashplayer, it tells me that I need to download it)

If I go to Tools>Manage Add ons, it still lists "Shockwave Flash object" version 8.0.22.0, created on 11/2/2009, 4:24PM. However, looking at the detailed properties, it also says that it is file Flash10d.ocx loaded a few minutes earlier. Another thing I noticed now is that it is shown only under "Downloaded Controls" (and not under "Currently loaded add-ons"). Also, the approved sites for it to run on are blank and the button to "allow on all sites" is not given as a choice: it only highlights the button to delete all sites. Could this be the problem and how do I fix that?

The files in the folder Flash are still the same, although they do have the new update time.

The Adobe Flash player 10 Active X(version 10.0.42.34) is listed in the "add or remove programs" list, but does not show a size listed against it.

A big unknown is still the dummy folder "flashold" in (Micromed) with the old flashutil10b file (which I could not delete). Would not think that it would be causing a problem at this time, but can't be sure.

Hi akt, regarding the websites asking for FP. They are looking for the Shockwave Flash Object, ActiveX Control, either Flash10c.ocx or the latest version Flash10d.ocx depending on whether they have updated their website. And with 8.0.22.0 sitting in the add ons, not going to work. I think this version was updated in 2007, since vs 8 came out in 2005.

Somewhere along the way it was never been updated.

It appears that the Uninstall did not remove the vs 8.0.22.0, so we are going to have to uninstall again. Perhaps a step was left out. I would like you to read over the following link, perhaps print it out since it will be the one to go by.

http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_tn_19166_en-us

Go over this link also and print it out to make it easier to follow. ( you don't have to, just a suggestion)

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html  Pay particular attention to the last "Note", important for IE

When you read over these links you will see that running Administrative privileges are necessary for the Registry and the

system32. Doing the clock test is a very easy way to make sure.

You wouldn't think one vs 8.0.22.0 could cause so much work:-)

Hi, will you please please help me? My problem is slightly different as i seem to be able to use Flash Player 10 but whenever I go to Adobe and try and download the updated version my screen freezes then it says not responding and IE closes down. I have IE8 and windows XP and I am the administrator as I can adjust the date and time.

Hi pj, this thread is growing!  Glad you picked up on the clock tip. Something appears to be blocking the download.

What anti-virus/spyware program or programs are you using that run in real time? Do any contain a firewall? If not,

what firewall do you use?

Did you read and follow carefully this Adobe Uninstaller link: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html ?

What version of FP are you using since you haven't been able to install the latest version 10.0.42.34?

Thanks

Hi pj, Norton security and their firewall will block the install of FP. Due to this you may not have had a clean Uninstall either.

Before you try another Install, I would suggest you go to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash and open the Flash folder and post back everything including version#'s that is there.

Also go to Tools>Manage add ons (both now or currently loaded & has been loaded or however it is worded-check the drop down arrow) and post back what is listed for Shockwave Flash Object...ActiveX Control....Enabled...Flash10??.ocx.

Here is a link from Adobe that also describes issues: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html  The next to the last

paragraph..."Internet Utilities blocking FP"

If you prefer an offline FP Installer I'll provide that if you like.  You may not have to Uninstall again, depends on the info to the above.

Thanks

Hi,

Here is what is in the Flash folder:

  • Folder called FlashPlayerTrust
  • Flash10.c.ocx Active X Control

  • Uninstall_Active X / flash player active x installer / company: adobe systems inc / file version: 10.0.32.18 / date created 1/1/2010 20:07

Here is what is in tools:

Hi pj, thanks. In the Flash folder: the first item I am not familiar with although I have seen it listed elsewhere. I need to find out what it is; perhaps something from the past. The next 3 are fine. What I don't see is FlashUtil10c.exe, the executable.

In the add ons, you will notice that on the date of 18/7/2009 when entries were installed in the Flash folder, the SWO ActiveX Control was also installed. It is even listed as Flash10c.ocx which indicates the version 10.0.32.18. Now it gets strange, the version number is 10.0.22.87. I don't think this is a problem just a glitch, since the 10c.ocx would probably

rule and that goes along with what is in the Flash folder. Just an observation.

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

This link is an offline Installer for the latest version 10.0.42.34. You already have the Uninstaller link. A clean Uninstall and a clean Install is what I suggest you do.

However, put these on your desktop. Then close all browsers, disconnect from the Internet, disable the Norton Security and the firewall. Run the Uninstaller, Reboot according to the Note for IE per the Uninstaller link article.

Then Run the Installer, Reboot. Then enable your security & firewall, connect back up to the Internet.

Check the Flash folder & the add ons.

Test here http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about

Post back when finished. Thanks

Hi,

Sorry it took me so long to reply.

Flash folder:

  • folder: flashplayertrust
  • get flash MAN file
  • uninstall_active x / file verison: 10.0.32.18
  • flashutil10.d / adobe flash player helper 10.0r42 / file version: 10.0.42.34
  • flash10d.ocx

Add-ons:

  • shockwave flash object / enabled / version: 10.0.22.87 / type: active x control / file: flash10d.ocx

I tested it and it said I had the latest version. I don't have an .exe file should i be worried about this? Again thank you so much for helping me.

Hi pj, thanks for the info. Well, we have 2 entries of FP vs 10.0.42.34 in the Flash folder and in add ons we have listed the Shockwave Flash Object vs 10.0.22.87( which is prior of 10.0.32.18 which is prior to 10.0.42.34) but listed as being Flash10d.ocx which is vs 10.0.42.34.  Clearly a mix up.

Yes an Uninstall/Install is needed.

However, prior to doing that, may I suggest running a Microsoft Safety Scan? There are 3 scans to choose from. I ran it this past week and think very highly of it. Protection Scan-scans everything on your computer for viruses/spyware and takes a long time. The Clean Up scan cleans the Registry and this is the one to run. The 3rd scan is the Tune Up.

The Protection scan would be something you could use later if you like & the Tune Up. For now the Clean Up Scan is most important.

Yes, you need the FlashUtil10d.exe and it is installed when FP is. But with 3 different vs of FP, who knows what happened.

Following is the link for the Microsoft Clean Up Scan:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

Thanks

P.S. Oops, I missed reading my Post#78 to you, even when I printed them. Your Post#83 then was after you uninstall/installed? That is fine, no problem since this Post that I am editing still stands either way. Thanks, just wanted to clear this up. This happens when there are more than one poster per thread, not often. I usually can keep it straight:-)

Hi Eidnolb,

Thanks again for all your help and tips.

I thought that I had gone through all the steps suggested by you in your latest posting, but went through them again to be on the safe side.

1. Used the uninstaller. Rebooted it to delete some of the files. Checked and verified that the "Flash" folder was empty, and that the Flashplayer was not listed in the "add or remove" programs.

However, "Shockwave ActiveX Control, version 8.5.1" was still listed in the Tools>Manage Add Ons list.

Also, tried deleting the old FlashUtil10b file from the dummy folder "flashold" with no success. I can do everything else requiring administrative rights, so I am not sure why that file does not want to be deleted. Anyway, I moved the file out of the folder Macromed (there is no folder flashold now)

2. Reinstalled the Flashplayer. Have all the 4 required files in the "flash" folder. It show up in the "add or remove" list. The Tools>Manage Add Ons list now shows both Shockwave Flash object (type ActiveX control, version 8.0.22.0, file Flashlod.ocx) and "Shockwave ActiveX Control” ( version 8.5.1, file SWDir.dll ). Both of these show up on the “all add-ons list”, but not on the “currently loaded add-ons list:

The system still does not think that the Flashplayer is installed on the computer.

This is getting to be really frustrating. Thanks for your patience in helping me.

Hi akt, I know it is aggravating. I usually have more patience than those that post here with the problems. My goal is to solve the problems, so I have to have more:-)

I appreciate your attitude and that you realize solving this is a team effort.  Thanks.

You have done well and have made progress. A couple of things you mentioned has caused me to ask a couple of more

questions.

What all of Adobe is listed in Add/Remove? Is there a DLM? (Download Manager?)

In the add ons, the Shockwave ActiveX Control vs 8.5.1 (file-SWDir.dll)- this is not connected with Adobe Flash Player in any way. This is the ActiveX for the Adobe Shockwave Player that you either have or have had installed. That is why I need to know what all of Adobe is in Add/Remove.

And the DLM could be preventing the removal of the Shockwave Flash Object vs 8.0.22.0, not sure but the DLM has caused some problems. It all depends on which site the FP Installer was downloaded from.

Oh, and please do the clock test.

Thanks
