HELP! Youtube videos very choppy, low FPS in HQ mode

Guest
Sep 15, 2010 Sep 15, 2010

I have a problem that I need help with, seems like any video I try to  play on Youtube now in high quality is somewhat choppy. Usually I get a  10 FPS drop in high quality mode compared to 240p (240p I have no drops  in FPS I believe), yet this does not happen on the other computers I  have.

The current computer I use has windows 7 64 bit, ATI radeon 5850  graphics card, 8 GB of ram, and an i7 processor so it can't be due to  the fact that the technology is out of date. The other computers are Windows XP service pack 2 and my friend's computer also said that the videos I showed him that were choppy for me were fine for him. I believe he runs a Mac.

My flash is  updated to the most current setting too and this happens on every  browser I've tried on here, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I've  also downloaded one of my videos in mp4 format and it's still choppy  like on the site here. Is this a graphics card issue or a flash based  issue?

I have 2 downloadupdaters. 1 is downloadupdater version 1.1.0.2

the other is downloadupdater2 version 1.3.0.0, published by npdnupdater2.

There are two other plugins I have that start with np, one is Microsoft Windows Meedia Player Firefox Plugin and the other is Windows Live Photo Gallery. Maybe it's a windows thing? Should I disable the plugins?

Hi, thanks for checking further. The np for Windows Media Player and the Windows Live Photo Gallery are good.

A lot of plugins for FF have that previx but they  all have a Publisher and you can search the Publisher, etc to find out what it is.

Now this npdnu, hides its' name and it takes some searching. The "np" throws you off because you think it's ok; the real name is the "dnu" part of it. This is connected with an outfit called MetaStream and could have come from AOL.

The others that you found, the downloadupdater version 1.1.0.2 and the downloadupdater2 vs 1.3.0.0  & the publisher shows npdnudater2. I actually was reading about them.

I'm sure you did not knowingly Install these, at least I wouldn't think so. A lot of time they Install themselves, they are connected with MetaStream, AOL, AIM, Viewpoint and (worse) I have a folder and quite a bit of info on them from searching on them for someone else.

Yes, I would Remove them and then Reboot. Before you turn in for the night(which I'm about to do:-), I would Disable AVG Search, AVG Security Toolbar and AVG Security Toolbar BHO. Then check to see if you have AVG LinkScanner. Right click and open the AVG icon in the system tray, Double click on the LinkScanner. UN check the Search-Shield & the Active Surf Shield. Then SAVE the changes. You can Enable them tomorrow if you like. Turn off the AVG Anti-Virus also, so nothing interferes with the Malwarebytes Scan.  Now if you don't want to do this tonight, that's fine. I just realized what time it is.

Sometime tomorrow.

Then I would update Malwarebytes and run a full scan.

Have a good night,

eidnolb

Yeah I can confirm they came from AOL, since I uninstalled the download helper and then the plugins for firefox both disappeared. I also ran malwarebytes and found nothing, yet the video is still laggy. This is very odd.

Hi, ok, glad you got rid of that junk, some of it is very invasive. You can get a lot of this stuff from AOL, Viewpoint is another one you don't want on your system. Sometimes that installs just by visiting some AOL sites! Glad Malwarebytes didn't find anything. One thing they can remove it when they find junk unlike some other Anti-Virus programs that I could name:-)

Does youtube have any info on the requirements for the videos?  Another thread I'm trying to help is having a problem with videos and the Broadcom Crystal HDBCM70012 chip. I'm just doing some searching on it.

Our other helper may be back tonight or this weekend (I hope!!)LOL, and he is more versed in the Video issues than I am.

I'm more Flash Player/Anti-Virus/ and Troubleshooting those problems.

That LinkScanner of AVG, I would leave it disabled, as it does cause problems.

Now that we have some of the junk gone, I need to look at the Adobe programs you have. Not so much the programs, but if you post back just the Adobe program add ons, then I'll know what they are anyway by that info. So when you have time, do that. I have a folder with some info on AdobeAir, Acrobat, etc that the add ons conflict, so I want to take a look at them.

Thanks,

eidnolb

The only add on that I have right now for firefox that is adobe related besides flash is Adobe Acrobat. Are you talking about program files or just my add ons? Cause for add ons that's all that I noticed.

Hi, yes just the addons/plugin/extensions in FF. Ok, I'm just keeping track right now. Do you use FF or IE the most? It must be IE or else you would have more addons in FF.

When you listed your Flash files, the FlashPlayerTrust, the rpconverter. Can you open that and post back the files there and then check in your Add ons(all categories) for the RealPlayer add ons?

Thanks,

eidnolb

I use firefox the most. I hate IE with a passion and I hardly EVER use it. I use Firefox, then Opera, then Chrome. I do have a lot of plugins for firefox but I just never listed them. I only have a few firefox extensions though.

Also, rpconverter is a file in the FlashPlayerTrust folder, and that is the only file in the FlashPlayerTrust folder.

Here's my realplayer plugins for firefox:

Realjukebox NS plugin 1.0.3.775

Realplayer Version Plugin 6.0.12.775

Realplayer G2LiveConnect-Enabled Plug In (32 bit) 6.0.12.775

Realplayer HTML5VideoShim Plug-in (32 bit)1.0.0.0

Hi, Ok, then let's concentrate on FF. RealPlayer plugins have caused issues with other users. I don't use it and can only go by what I have seen. You may want to disable those and see if that makes any difference. Another thing, I know you have turned off the hardware acceleration, so be sure it is still off for now otherwise if we disable a plugin and the H.A. is on, we won't know which worked.

When you said you Installed a LOT of programs, then I'm sure you have a LOT of plugins/addons as well:-) There are very few programs that do not Install additions to the browsers.

Take a look at your FF plugins/addons, especially any that relate to video.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hello wolf,

Sorry to interrupt like this but a Google search turned up your post for me. I located those exact same download updaters in my Firefox plugins (the 1.1.0.2 and the 1.3.0.0 from npdnu) as well and didn't know what they were. Can you please tell me a bit more specifically how you got rid of them? I can't find this AOL download helper that you mentioned. Thanks!

UPDATE: I take that back, I think I have fixed the problem. I first found and deleted the .dll files in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins then later found the Download Helper (or whatever it was called) thing from AOL LLP in Add/Remove Programs, and got rid of that too. Problem solved, I think.

Hi, this is important. We'll hold up other things until we see about this. I need some info about the downloader updater.

Is it in IE and FF both? Is the Publisher's name Biennesoft? What version is Installed? Is there a Toolbar Installed in each browser?

Thanks,

eidnolb

I also have this problem.  A day after I've downloaded the latest flash player, the videos I watch (youtube, flash, etc) have all been choppy.  Sometimes it lasts for a few moments, then later throughout the whole video.  The worst part was when the videos stopped working completely and a gray circle with an exclamation mark appears on all my video screens, giving off an annoying buzzing sound that won't shut up unless I turned off the sound.  I had to close my safari program to make it stop, but I had to right click on it to quit multiple times because it won't respond.  This has to stop, or else I'll go mad.  What should I do?

Oh don't worry, that's not my real email address.  I just put that in by chance since it wouldn't accept my other user names.  I'll see if I can change that.

I disabled all the real player plugins and H.A. is still off and still nothing changed. A weird thing I've noticed though is that most of the choppy videos were uploaded back in early to mid 2009. Not sure if that makes a difference but it's kinda odd.

Hi wolf, Interesting. You raise a point about those videos that are choppy  being early to mid 2009. Well, that is something to think about. However, didn't you say those same videos play fine on the XP's?

Well, RealPlayer addons disabled didn't make a difference, so you can go ahead and enable them. I'm sure you use RP.

With your system, I can't understand why you are having a problem, actually. Other users that have had choppy video issues, black screens, green screens and color distortions have been helped by turning off the hardware acceleration.

Some it didn't help, but they had to update their graphic and video drivers to the latest versions.

when I right click on the video and click on "show video info" then it displays the FPS of the video. I can only get around 21 FPS max in 360p yet 240p works fine with 30+ fps like it should be. I've tested the video on my other 2 computers and both in 360p got 30 FPS too. So I have no clue why it's lagging on my new pc.

Now when I read what you said above, it seems to me that you need the hardware acceleration turned ON.  Does the XP have it turned on? It seems as if something was slowing down on your Win7. Do you remember if when you took those readings whether h.a. was turned on? Just something to think about.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Yeah it was on even when the videos were choppy. I've updated the graphics card and everything and I'm stumped as to why videos are still choppy on youtube. It's not just the 2009 videos, every other video is a bit choppy some point during my viewing time, but it's only down to like 26 FPS compared to 20 ish on the digital camera bowling video I showed you. Even after I restarted my computer and only opened firefox, the video was still choppy. I'm stumped.

Hi, Oh, ok, so whether the H.A. is on or off, it didn't make any difference. What about videos on other websites, same problem?

The updated graphic card, that was the ATI radeon 5850. Did you get that from the manufacturer's website?

When you played them on the XP, was the hardware acceleration on? Just wondering why the 360p got better FPS than the Win7.

I think there is an answer somewhere, finding it is the problem.

Well, tomorrow is another day:-)

Have a good night,

eidnolb

Hi Wolf, for what it is worth, a couple of threads:

Perhaps there is something that will be helpful.

Sadly that didn't help, my heatsink is brand new and only 5% of my CPU is used when watching videos, and I have one of the newest video cards today. I wish I knew what's going on.

The thing is, the video doesn't seem to randomly play choppy for me, it's always the same choppiness in certain parts of the video. I would think it would be a youtube problem but since it works fine on my other computers I'm guessing it's the player especially since it does the same choppiness in every browser I use.

Hi, It may be a little of both. However I read quite a bit last night on youtube and many users that upload their videos in HQ(and they posted all of their info when they uploaded) have found that youtube has changed their technology in some way so that when they play their video it is NOT in HQ!! Some not even in HD. These posters are regulars there and know what they are doing and talking about. Of course I could not understand their specs, but I sure understood the point they were making.

They also found the changes affected their fps etc. So their HQ videos when anyone played them, were barely minimum.

So from what I gathered from those many conversations, it was not their computers nor their videos, but what youtube has done.

So I really don't know, it may be what is going on at youtube and not your computer.

Thanks,

eidnolb

I hope so, but I wonder why it plays fine in HQ on my other computers? Maybe it's because my other browsers have older cookies from youtube or I wonder if it's because windows XP makes the videos play differently when visiting the site?

Hi, I thot of that too about on XP. How can you know whether the video is being played on HQ? Especially if it is not "really" HQ?

I'll find the link I was reading and post them. You understand the specs. I don't, but understood what they said was happening to their videos. The difference in the upload and the playing of them.

Thanks,

I think I can now say that it's youtube and not my pc, because I forgot that my netbook has windows 7 on it so I just tried it out and guess what, I have the EXACT same choppiness on there as well. Unless I downloaded a plugin that screwed everything up on my netbook and on my desktop, it's youtube's problem. Unfortunately I'm not 100% certain on that though.
