Performance issues in latest PPAPI Flash Player releases?

Explorer ,
Mar 21, 2015 Mar 21, 2015

Hi there,

I've recently noticed some pretty serious performance issues in the latest versions of the PPAPI Flash Player in Chrome.

I'm using:

  • Windows 7 64-bit
  • Chrome Version 41.0.2272.101 m (64-bit)
  • Flash Player PPAPI Version: 17.0.0.134

I've noticed a large drop in performance recently when updating Chrome, I have been using Away3D 4.1 (using Stage3D) to create a series of Generative Art experiments, if you check out the one below I find that in Internet Explorer and Firefox (using the NPAPI version of the Flash Player) the FPS performance on my system is around 35-40 fps for me, but in Chrome's PPAPI player it drops drastically to around 6 or 7 fps.

I just recently updated my Chrome version so this is a recent change... around a few weeks ago this content was working fine in Chrome, around the same 35-40 fps I am getting in other browsers.

http://waroo.com/genart9s

Is anyone else out there seeing these performance issues with recent releases of Chrome's PPAPI Flash Player?

That's great news, thanks for the update.  We work closely with the Chrome team, and there have been performance fixes on both sides.  I'd have to debug it to figure out who to attribute it to, but it's great to know that things are trending in the right direction.  We'd definitely like to get to parity with NPAPI in terms of performance (there's frequently a trade-off between security and performance), and we'll continue to target opportunities for gains where they arise.

Thanks!

Thanks.  I think I answered your thread in the public forum, but I'll have my QE guys try and regress it.

Hi,

I'm presently troubleshooting your issue and I was wondering if you happened to have known what versions of Chrome and Flash you previously had prior to the updating.

Hi quentinb, I will do some more investigation and try to get you more info, however because of Chrome's auto-updating I'm not sure I can get an exact version.

I do know that Chrome v39.0 (the version I currently use at work) does not have this issue, and would be using Flash Player 16 I believe?

Hi,

No need to look further. The version info for your work computer should be sufficient for my investigation. However, can you provide me with both your work and home computer specs. I know you are working on Win7 x64. I would also like to know the speed/type of processor and graphics card as well. Thank you.

Regards,

Quentin

Hi there,

Thanks for the info. Would you be willing to try something on you home computer.

I'm using FF 36.0.4. (Making sure we are on the same page )

1. Can you clear the history/cache for FF and then start 'fresh' with http://waroo.com/genart9s

2. Note the FPS

3. Next, don't dump the cache and just reload the page

4. Note the FPS

I am now using Chrome 42.0.2311.50 (so we are definitely on the same page here )

1. Repeat all steps above

Shoot me the results once you have them. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Regards,

Quentin

Hi Quentin,

I've done the above, I get 30fs in Firefox before and after the refresh and cache clear.

And I get 8 fps on average in Chrome, both before and after the cache clear.

Unfortunately I just realised that this generative art experiment does have some randomness to it, which may effect the total polygons per reload. This isn't great for benchmarking so I'm thinking I'll remove the randomness and make the polygons always the same. However regardless of this, the FPS difference is large enough to notice.

Would you like me to fix this now and upload a new swf? I can also send you the source code if you like?

Thanks,

Greg

Hey Greg,

Actually if you could remove the randomness that would be preferred. I agree that the spread b/w the two browsers is significant enough to warrant concern however in order to compare the different sub-versions of Chrome it would help to have that randomness out of the picture.

Just shoot me along the new url once you are done. Presently I don't think I need the source code but that could change as I dive deeper. Thank you and have a great weekend.

Regards,

Quentin

That would be cool.  We're seeing pretty wide differences between cached and uncached content, so we were curious if you were seeing it as well.  It looks like this is a regression in Chrome itself, but we'll need to debug it and file a bug with a more detailed analysis.

Hi guys,

I've uploaded a new version here: http://waroo.com/genart9s2/

This one should hold steady at 11572 polygons.

I've just re-tested with this version and I'm seeing the same results though.

Chrome

9 fps with clean cache, and 9 fps on reload.

Firefox

30fps with clean cache, and 30fps on reload.

Hi Greg,

We're still investigating this issue. Presently we're still deciding if this is a Flash issue or a Chrome issue. Can you do the following for me:

1. Can you provide me the "about://gpu" info for your work PC

2. Please keep your work PC environment unchanged (i.e. keep it at Chrome version 39), so that we can do some comparisons with other versions

3. We are presently trying to identify Chromium builds that closely match M39/M40/M41/M42. Once we have identified them we'll want you to try them on your home PC to see whether this issue is Chrome's injection or Flash's injection.

4. Are you familiar with 'manually installing' PPAPI flash? If so then I will send you the latest PPAPI flash release so that you can install it on your work PC to confirm whether this is Flash's injection. If you are not familiar with doing the manual install I can easily send you instructions.

5. Can you type "about://flags" (leave out the quotes) on both work and home PCs. Then check "D3D11" setting for each PC .

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Regards,

Quentin

We met the same problem. After updated to Flash 17, we lost over 30% fps on our game when using chrome and pepperflash. I think it should be a generic problem for all Stage3D games

@Jiaqi

Can you provide me with the following :

1. Type 'about:gpu' (exclude the quotes) in the URL bar, then hit the Enter key. Please copy the entire page, then send that to me in a txt file

2. What version of Chrome are you presently using?

3. What version of flash are you presently using?

4. Do you remember the versions of Chrome/flash prior to the update?

5. What is the name of the game(s) that you are experiencing these issues?

6. Do(es) the game(s) have good fps when running in FireFox or IE?

7. Are you playing your game(s) on another computer where the fps is performing adequately when played in Chrome? If so please follow steps 1 to 3.

Thank you

Quentin

Chrome: Version 41.0.2272.118 m

Flash: 17.0.0.134

Flash 16 is OK on chrome, no this kind of performance issue.

On FireFox and IE, the fps is almost same as before when using Flash 17.

Hi Quetin,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you, I've been on an Easter holiday and just returned today.

I'm afraid my work PC has automatically updated itself over the last week or so, as it's now running Chrome v41

Do you know if there is a way I can downgrade to a particular version of Chrome easily?

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with manually installing the PPAPI Flash Player, please send through some instructions with the latest version of the player and I'll give it a go.

I'm also not seeing any D3D11 setting under "about://flags" on my Home PC.

I suppose it's good to hear that others (Jiaqi) are having this problem too and it's not just a an isolated case, might make it easier to track down with more data/machines?

Cheers,

Greg

Hi Greg,

Not a problem. Before we start playing with PPAPI files lets try one thing first.

Lets have you download the latest version of Chrome Canary and see if you have the same problem. You don't need to uninstall Chrome (stable) as both browsers will co-exist. For now we'll just do this on your home computer.

Here is the link to download for your home computer.

https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/canary.html?platform=win64

It's a pretty easy install and should only take 5 minutes or so. Once Installed check the FPS issue. Let me know what you find out. Also let me know the flash version that plays on Canary.

Cheers,

Quentin

Hi Quentin,

I've got Chrome Canary installed now and it appears unchanged, giving me more or less 8/9fps on this swf: http://waroo.com/genart9s2/

The version of Flash is: 17.0.0.158

Cheers,

Greg

Hi Greg,

I apologize for the delayed response. I've downloaded one of Chrome's continuous builds and would like you to try to run it on your home computer. Once you unzip the file attached please place the folder on your desktop.

1.Within that folder is a 'chrome.exe' file.

2. Right click to get the context menu.

3. Choose "Run as administrator"

4. you will get some dialog/alert boxes pop up but just click "ok" through them

5. Now run your URL " http://waroo.com/genart9s2/ "

What is your FPS

Regards,

Quentin

No problem Quentin,

I'm afraid I can't download that file, it's asking me to login to Office 365 and then gives me the error:

Issue Type: User not in directory.

Is there somewhere else you could upload the file to? I can provide access to an FTP dropbox area we could use to transfer large(ish) files, if it helps?

Cheers,

Greg
