Hello, I am an IT tech for my company. We are having issues with PDF's being opened from IE. (Several programs we use are still only compatible with it.
They receive an error stating: "There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader. If it is running, please exit and try again. (523:523).
My team & I have been through the posts previously mentioning the issue to no avail.
The issue appeared with update to Vers. 2020.006.20042. Our systems are all Windows 10 1803 and newer.
Disabling protected mode is something we cannot do in our environment so that solution is a no go.
We found disabling the adobe add-on in IE bypasses the error but causes some of our programs to malfunction as they require use of embedded pdf's. Disabling Enhanced Protected Mode in IE has also proven to not solve the issue.
The problem persists when IE is the default browser of Adobe set to default pdf reader.
We have even disabled Edge as that proved to be a source of the problem in some previous posts, but it did not help.
Any assist would be welcome. Thanks

We found a very short term fix is to delete the Dc folder from users AppData\Local\Adobe\Acrobat\DC.
This works for about an hour or so..
We tried, remove, reinstall, trash users profile, etc, on a few different computers to no avail.

That looks like it solves something in the short term. In your cases does the folder get rebuilt after a short while?

We are running into the same issues unfortunately. I tried deleting that temporary folder and it still didn't work for me, the folder recreates almost immediately. Looking forward to a fix for this issue.

We've come to believe that there may be a security policy in place interfering with the Protected Mode sandbox. We are trying to see if creating a white list policy works. That might help direct you guys.

In rare occasions when deleting AppData\Local\Adobe\Acrobat\DC doesn’t fix the issue we’ve had to delete the following,
AppData\Local\Adobe
AppData\LocalLow\Adobe
AppData\Roaming\Adobe
Again, this only works for a very short while

Has the 523:523 error been resolved yet? I have been running into this issue when I try to open pdf within SAP. I have been researching but it seems like no one has a long term solution. Any help is appreciated.

No we have not found a permanent resolution. We believe it has something to do with their sandbox in protected mode and our security policies. Disabling the IE adobe add-on has allowed us to open PDF's again, but for items that try to open them embedded it opens up in a standalone adobe instance.
