Adding background color to running headings

I am new to FrameMaker. Currently, I am in the process of converting company materials into .fm documents but I can't figure out how to add shading to a heading 2. What I need to do is something like "reverse text" but I don't know how to attach it to the heading two style. The goal is to have white text over a dark gray background that spans the width of the page.

I'm thinking that I heard mention that background color for text was a feature finally going to be implemented in the soon-to-be-released FrameMaker 10.

The "heading 2" I was referring to is a section marker that appears throughout the document. Each chapter may have 4-5 sections with this formatting. In Word, this was as simple as changing the text to white and adding a border and shading to the "heading 2" style. I would prefer not to create a table each time I create a section. Also, I am using a formula (something like C:Section <n>.<n+>...) that numbers these sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and so on.

Thanks for the clarification. But I’m afraid you’re out of luck. FrameMaker doesn’t “do” this without using workarounds such as those already mentioned.

Thanks. I'll have to figure out a way around this, or revise company style.

You say running headings, but then talk of heading 2. I’m a bit confused as to what you want.

If you are talking about a heading in the text, rather than a page-header, I’d suggest using a single-cell table to hold the heading. Use table shading to get a grey background, and format the paragraph to use white text.

I've got something similar to that for my FM9 docs - it's got a Title paragraph style with white letters on a blue background. I think the way it's done in my case is with a block of colour on the reference page (I didn't design it; just inherited it). I know it's not exactly what you're looking for because if the text rolls over one line, the background shading doesn't follow & the white text disappears. If you'd like a sample template, contact me & I can send one.
