You're probably going to have to run it inside a VM that runs an operating system like XP.

Not really - FM8 came out eons ago - long before Windows10 was a glimmer in Microsoft's eye, so you can hardly expect it to work. Some people have reported that they've got it running on a Win10 environment, but I suspect that's just luck.

re: You're probably going to have to run it inside a VM that runs an operating system like XP.

And the two challenges there are:
what VM, and
how to get XP license (and install bits)

If one absolutely positively has to run FM8, getting a new machine with downgrade rights to Windows 7 might be a solution (and apparently still available). Then use this hack. Or get a used Sun SPARC workstation, and run the still-supported FM8/Unix on it.

But the real question might be: is it necessary to run FM8? FM8 is on the Unicode site of a major boundary, so using any later FM, and restricting document modifications to FM8-only features, should work. Edit in FM2017, save as MIF2017, open elsewhere in FM8.

A former 'chef' of mine and his wife are still on FM-8 and had to switch to Windows 10. They could manage the situation with the compatibility mode setting for the the executable. Of course the needed to fiddle around somewhat - and it is not absolutely stable, but acceptable for them.

Strange...

We have no problems whatsoever with FrameMaker 7.2 and Windows 10. We haven't done anything "extra".

See Post#3 - "that's just luck" ;>)

Just for interest, was it a machine that started off with Win10 or was it an older one with FM7.2 on it that was upgraded?
