Any 9004 errors?????

Explorer ,
Mar 30, 2009 Mar 30, 2009
Is anyone getting a 9004 error doing anything in FM9? If so please tell me what you are doing to get the error and what patch you are at and what version of Acrobat you have. Also be very clear on what you are doing to get that error step by step will be great. Trying to find fixes for people and nothing is working and no one is saying anything about it!!!

Thank you from a very tried tech support person.

That's the general code indicating that FM has crashed for any reason.
By itself, it's not going to be very helpful to you or anyone here.

Make sure that your users are patched to the 9.0.1 version.

Thats another problem. I need to find more people with an error like that so we can find a trend or anything that is making this error come up. I know its general I have doing tech support long enough to see general errors. This one is not making any sense at all. In FM 8 we can track the error by the other numbers in the error and go and fix the issue in FM 9 we get the same number for a bunch of functions in FM 9 and putting the 9.0.1 patch on compounds the issue so I will not have anyone install that patch I will wait for a correct patch that wont rip everything out of FM.

FWIW, FM patches are not cumulative, so you'll have to install the
9.0.1 patch anyway when the "correct" patch comes out.

Hmmm, if everyone is patched to the same level, how can that
"compound' an issue? Just curious.

Good luck.

Viking, how about if you contribute to our ability to help you -- O/S, service pack levels, working with files locally vs. network, working in English vs. other languages, etc etc.

All I really to need to know if there are more people out there with the issues stated in my first post but I will break it down so we will be on the same page. It happens on XP SP2, SP3 and Vista SP1 all flavors of vista all on 32 bit no 64 bit calls yet. All files are local no networks . One person has images one dose not. One book is 2500 pages with 1039 images. The other book is just text. FM 9 no patch because the fix for it to work is a pain to do every time the it crashes (since the fix has to be done every time you open it). They get the error when saving one chapter to pdf or the book always in a diffrent spot with book. Also the big book person is getting the error when updating the book in RoboHelp 8. So yes Arnis its general but I need the numbers after 9004 to see if we can break it down a bit to find the issue cause with FM 8 we have a list and we use the numbers to find the fix but we are getting the same number for FM 9 for those two peoples issues and for using the Equation editor. So the very short version is there just cant be 6 people that can get this error and no one is calling about it and nothing on the forums so I am going to find the problems on my own. Any other questions. And the same files saved as FM 8 will not give an 8004 error so its just FM 9 with the issues.

Hopefully, you've (or someone in your organization has) sent copies of
the crash log files to Adobe at fmerror@adobe.com The Adobe engineers
do pay close attention to these errors.

FM9 is still quite new out of the starting gate and there are always
teething problems, especially with the major changes to the UI. That's
also why you're probably not finding many systematic reports yet on
crashes, as many people are still kicking the tires (so to speak) and
trying to make decisions about updating their workflows, rather than
going full bore production with it. I know I'm still at that stage.

FWIW, 9004, 6920460, 9676766, 0 is for deleting too many variables in
a row using the new pods.

As far as the start of this thread goes, there were no "issues"
stated. You only asked if anybody else had errors starting with 9004
and I simply tried to point out that *all* FM9 errors start with 9004.

I still don't understand what your stated problem with not patching
is? "FM 9 no patch because the fix for it to work is a pain to do
every time the it crashes (since the fix has to be done every time you
open it)" You only need to install the patch once. If getting FM to
crash somehow removes the patch in your installation, then I think
Adobe would be extremely interested in that. Patch issues are part of
the installation and are free technical support from Adobe.

It's important to let people know that the TCS version is being used,
since you state that you're also encountering a crash updating books
from RoboHelp 8. And it's also important to know if crashes are
happening with the structured or unstructured versions of FM.

You also could try take the reverse approach (in keeping with the
mutually beneficial spirit of these forums) by posting crash cases
here, indicating the relevant info, error code, and steps taken, in
case some else has encountered the same error or perhaps could suggest
a possible workaround. This might alert other users to serious bugs
that can be verified and hopefully passed on to Adobe engineers.

Hi Arnis,

I've always been under the impression that the crash numbers in FrameMaker are unrelated to a specific problem. So far the only crashes I have had with FM9 were caused when I was investigating SGML declaration limits for another forum thread. Those crashes also gave the crash code 9004, 6920460, 9676766, 0.

So if there is a direct correlation between crash codes and specific problems, is there a definitive resource that provides this information?

Ian,

AFAIK, the crash numbers (along with the complete log) are only useful
to Adobe engineers and the first four digits just refer to the release
version of FM. That is what I've been trying to suggest to the OP that
by itself, the 9004 info doesn't really mean anything when trying to
solicit information to build some sort of troubleshooting strategy.

9004, 6920460, 9676766, 0 This is the error for all the Issues I have stated thats what I am looking for is a list for things people are doing and getting this error or any other 9004 error. Arnis I have sent this the engineers and since I am out here asking for anyone getting this error I means they don't know what is causing this issue cause no one is reporting this error. This is the only 9004 error for about 10 different issues now. The patch is just another issue all together and also no is reporting the issue again. The patch rips the items from the paragraph and character designers and renders them useless or are you not seeing that. Also it dose not matter if its a standalone or in the TCS it gives the same error so now I would like to hear more issues with this error or any other error.

>The patch rips the items from the paragraph and character designers and renders them useless or are you not seeing that.

This was noted in an earlier post about the FM9 patch along with
instructions on how to deal with it. Repeating this info:

+++++++

Here's a workaround from Adobe:

*****************

a) Make sure Hide Panels on Close is OFF in
File->Preferences->Interface dialog (once we do this, this setting
persists for all subsequent FM session)

b) Close Para/Character/Table Designer once and reopen. This will fix
the issue. (need to be done once for FM session)

But when you get the 9004 error you have to do that every time you open FM back up it is not a fix its a useless work around for something that i have not seen fix anything that it says it will but the engineers now know this and still have no idea on what they did to screw that up. I know lots of people with that issue. I am one of the people that came up with that fix the day the patch came out. I know what I am doing here and I want to know what is going on and how to fix it since the engineers are not much help without more cases and this not document related since we can get the same error deleting variables, updating the book in Robohelp, working the equation editor and so on. With FM 8 we were able to get a list of different 8004 errors and come up with fixes for the different errors. But in FM 9 there is only one so now I want to know how people are getting this error so I can get it to the engineers so they could do there job.

I'm getting exactly the same error code , 6919244, 9675646, 0 when I try to start Frame 9.0 which has been freshly installed from CD on a Windos XP SP3 system.

Then I installed the patches 9.0.1 and 9.0.2 and now I'm getting: 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0.

Any advise would be very much appreciated!

Hans

Yes, I'm now getting 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0 error when I try to save as a pdf.  I'm using the structure Chapter.fm template, creating a new FrontMatter, Index or TOC do not create the error.  Could I have a corrupted structure Chapter.fm template?

The computer's default printer, that I can print the document to, is a Dell Laser Printer 1700n.  I have deleted the structure Chapter.fm document and reinstalled FM, after removing the 2 patches, to reinstall a fresh version of the structure Chapter.fm file.  So now starting with a new Chapter.fm, it still error out when trying to Save As PDF ..., but only on the Chapter.fm document.

any better result if you change your default printer to the "Adobe PDF" printer, either in Windows itself or within the FM print dialog?

I use a pretty standard HP Laserjet PS printer. Switching to another PS printer doesn't change anything. I don't come as far as to using the print as dialog since Frame produces this error at startup and doesn't come up at all.

I suspect a third party plugin to be the culprit. I'll investigate that further and let you know.

When working with FM, it's highly advisable to have the AdobePDF as your default printer.

Check out Sundorne's SetPrint utility at: http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm

This will automatically switch your system default printer for the FM session to the AdobePDF.

Been getting the 9004 error on various occasions. Windows XP Pro, FrameMaker 9.0p237

Error seems the same. 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0

1. Deleting more than one user variable in the Variables pod. In the specific case that causes the error, there are 3 custom user variables, the first and third user variables are being deleted. Deleting the first user variable works fine, then deleting the third variable will cause the error. I tried other combinations/orders of deleting user variables, result is deleting more than one causes the error to occur.

Error does not happen if after the first variable is deleted - the variables pod is closed, clicking anywhere in the document, and then reopen the variables pod to delete the next variable. Using the refresh button in the variables pod generates the same error.

2. After working in FrameMaker for a while and depending how large the document is, the Pods and Panels don't refresh or function, if FrameMaker is not restarted, it will generate the same error.

3. When updating text insets of a FrameMaker document when running a frame script that worked previously with FrameMaker 7.2. Happens on the Update TextInset command, not sure if I'm running into an issue with FrameMaker or something needs to change in my FrameScript.

I think the error I'm seeing is related to Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended latest update to release 9.1.1.  Yesterday this update was installed.

Today I uninstalled FM and Acrobat from the computer

Removed all folders and files found in:

C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker

C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat

C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat

Reinstalled FM and Acrobat from CD, not errors.

Updated FM to 9.0p237, no errors.

Updated Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended to latest update 9.1.1, errors.

*****

UPDATE

To confirm it's relase 9.1.1, I unistalled Acrobat only and deleted any folders / files as outlined above, then reinstalled Acrobat 9.0 from CD, no errors.

sdq, that's good detective work -- I haven't yet updated my Acrobat, although from what I read on the security blogs the update is VERY, VERY important, there are lots of reports the last couple of days on malware taking advantage of unpatched versions, particularly when opening PDFs and using Flash in Internet Explorer.

Vikingweb and arcasys or anyone else who experienced this problem,

Did you find any solution for your crash problems?

I can no longer open FrameMaker 9.0 (installed with all current patches) and get the same error at startup:

9004, 6919244, 9675646, 0

The problem came out of the blue when I tried to open FrameMaker 9.0m, which had functioned well for several weeks.

Any pointers would be very welcome because Adobe support just gives me generic troubleshooting stuff and I'm stuck.

Thanks!
