Question

Apply character format with search/replace

Hi fellow Framemaker users,

maybe this has already been asked in the past but I can't find any answer on the net or I just don't understand it.

I'm migrating from InDesign to Framemaker and am now copying content over from a ID document to a FM book. Some product names contain characters which have to be in italic. My plan was to copy the content from ID to FM, search the whole book for strings which should be in italic and apply a character format to all found instances automatically by means of the search/replace function. I'm a returning FM user and I've used FM 6 to 8 several years ago. I seem to remember that I did something similar in the past, but I just can't remember how.

Could anyone please point me in the right direction? Maybe there's a plugin involved? It don't seem to see the wood for the trees...

Thanks in advance

Tom

    Tom,

You first need to apply an instance of the character tag that you want to use for the italics. Then use the Edit > Copy Special > Character Format operation to pick up the character tag into the past buffer. Now in your Find operation, look for the Character Format... that has the font attributes that you need to apply the character tag to. Then select the Change to By Pasting. This will then apply the character tag that you have loaded into the paste buffer.
