auto spellcheck makes scrolling etc glacial in some docs

Hi everyone

We've just upgraded from FM7 to FM10 and have speed problems with some (but not all) docs when auto spellcheck is turned on in the preferences.

Affected documents can take seconds for stuff like scrolling, selecting text, opening a menu etc. CPU usage spikes during the bad behaviour, to about 50% on my PC. Toggling auto spellcheck on and off toggles the bad behaviour on and off. Documents behave the same on different PCs and it doesn't seem to depend on document length or the number of imported graphics.

Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks,

Rebecca

Not on 10 here, so no direct experience with ASC.

... and have speed problems with  some (but not all) docs when auto spellcheck is turned on in the  preferences.

Can you characterise the "not all" documents?

Affected documents can take seconds for stuff  like scrolling, selecting text, opening a menu etc. CPU usage spikes  during the bad behaviour, to about 50% on my PC.

I've seen such slowdowns in the past with large imported TIFF rasters, and see it today with imported EPS images rotated at arbitrary angles.

Documents  behave the same on different PCs and it doesn't seem to depend on  document length or the number of imported graphics.

If others are NOT seeing it, identifying your root cause might require readers to know the OS (XP, Vista, W7), 32- or 64-bit mode, installed RAM, CPU core count and GHz.

I just switched all that auto-$#%& nonsense OFF on my smartphone this morning. It was driving me nuts. I doubt that I would ever use ASC in FM.

Rebecca,

I would like to investigate this issue. If possible can you mail us a sample file (rabansal@adobe.com) in which you see this issue.

Also, please confirm that you have FM 10.0.1 patch applied. Please check FM version number in Help --> About FrameMaker and you should see 10.0.1.402 as version number. If not, please apply the patch from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5142 as this patch fixes one of the slow scroll issues in auto spell check.

Regards,

Rajat Bansal

Hi Rajat

Thanks for that! We haven't installed the patch, and I can't get it to download. I get an error message saying

HAVP
The following server is  down:
Could not read body

Is a server down? Or is the file corrupted? Or does Adobe's download process just hate me like usual? I've had a lot of trouble downloading trial versions in the past.

I'll try the download again later.
