Hello everyone,<br />I have a multilevel numbering series where the value in the <n> bulding blok stops at 9 for somthing like 1.9.10 and the next item is reset to 1.0.1. I asume that the incremental value stops at 9 when the value for the <n+> block that follows gets to 10.<br />Does anyone know how to set the <n> block to accept two digits?<br />Thanks in advance.<br /><br />Roberto

Roberto,

Autonumber building blocks keep incrementing until they are reset, so
it shouldn't stop at 9. Check your paragraph tags prior to the reset
for culprits.

Also, if you could post the string that you're using for the
autonumbering and your FM version, it might help in case there's an
alternate (easier) way of creating your sequence.

What version are you working with?

However, that shouldn't be happening unless something is resetting the counter.

Assuming it isn't being unintentionally reset by another tag in the series, the first thing I'd check is that there's enough room for two digits in the paragraph tag.

I've seen some numbering setups that used tab stops to position the digits in the xx.xx.xx string, but only granted enough space to display one numeral -- the second was there, but hidden.

Thanks Arnis,<br />in this case I`m using FM 7.2 on XP<br /><br />The paragragh format numbering string is very simple <$chapnum>.<n>.<n+>.\t<br />or at least so I thought...<br />I already checked the numbering properties of the document in question to see if there was anything that could have an impact on that but didn`t find much.<br /><br />I also thought that blocks didn`t have a ceiling, but as per the way they`re behaving in my document is kind of weird to me.

As Art suggests, if you aren't using a series label for your
autonumber, then any other use of a non-labelled autonumber in other
paratags may affect your numbering sequences.

Typical usage of series labels is F: for figures, T: for tables, H:
for headings, L: for lists, etc.

I already checked for the space by adding a + to the n in the block so I could get 1.40.38 for example and room doesn`t seem to be the problem.
However, something is resetting the n value...
I`m dealing with multilevel numbering for headings and this is the first time that I use that for I usually try to avoid such practice, but this time I don`t have another choice.

Roberto,<br /><br />Are you specifying a numbering track by prefacing the string with a letter?<br /><br />Like:<br /> H:<$chapnum>.<n>.<n+>.\t <br />or some other letter that isn't in use in another numbering track?<br /><br />Art

Hello, <br /><br />I have several problems with numbering. The figures and the tables are not increasing even though the paragraph configuration includes <n+1>.<br />Thus, at the beginning of each chapter, the number of table or figure starts at 1.<br />What can i do?

In the book file, select the component files, right click, select Numbering, and set the paragraph numbering to inherit from the previous file instead of restarting.

Thank you so much Art and Arnis.
Just as you mentioned, the label was missing in the string and now everything is correct. However, I have a question about the impact it may have on a future book that I`m planning to build.
The thing is that I`m writing on a sort of master empty document pieces of text or sections of a document in a series of text flows that I will use as text insets later on in different books. If I keep the same label for the multilevel numbering for headings in the books and in the master document, will that be alright to ensure stability and coherence in the books that will be built?

No, assuming your paragraphs are set properly, it should just work.

And yes, you need to update and save the book file for the numbering to change -- setting the tabs just tells the program what to do; it doesn't automagically change things on its own.

The Chapter numbering probably went south because you haven't set up the numbering for those properly -- again, select all the chapters except the first one in the book file, right-click, select Numbering and set things up on the Chapter tab to number based on the preceding chapter, just as you did on the Paragraph tab.

You may want to read over the Help file to better understand how numbering works...

Yes, it should work automatically, provided you keep all the insets and text in the same text flow -- A is the default; so long as you don't change that, all the counters will just keep clicking over.

i've already read two books on Framemaker and i still have my numbering issue. I took a document that already existed and i do not know if everything was done correctly.
I've already updated all the chapters thanks to you. However table and figures still start at 1 on each chapter.
