How to open the file in FM when I get the error message: "it can't be opened with this release of the product"? Even though I try to open the FM 9 file with FM 9.

Correct answer Arnis Gubins

Use any text editor to open the binary .fm file and examine the first bit. It will have something like "<MakerFile 9.0H>" which indicates which version created th file. If it is greater than 9.0, then the file was created in a newer version , which FM9 can't opem. If it doesn't have the <MakerFile..." info a the starf, then it's not a FrameMaker file.

If it still looks like it's supposed to be an FM file after applying Arnis's test, try a "heroic open".

It was created in FM 11... Is it possible to open it in FM 9 then because that's what I have?

You’ll need to have them do a Save As for you to open it in FM9

Going to need more details about what’s going on – were the files created in FM9? Were you able to open them before? What’s changed?
