Question

Chapters without Tables or Figures when generating LOT/Fs

When generating a List of Tables or List of Figures, all chapters appear regardless if there is a Table or Figure in that particular chapter.

Is there any way, through a template or paragraph tags, where this doesn't happen? I just want the chapters with the Tables or Figures to be displayed when the LOT/F is generated.

Thanks in advance!

Check your settings for which paragraph tags are to be included in your LOF and LOT. If your lists include ONLY the tags for figure captions and table titles, then no chapters should be listed.

I am guessing that maybe you also have the tags for the chapter titles in your lists, as you likely do for your TOC.

I have all associated Figure tags as well as Chapter Title tags. The Figure tags do not have Chapter Number references...

Because the books that we generate are so large, it's nice to have the List of Figures/Tables spearated by chapter. The downside is that all Chapters are generted in the LOT/F eventhough there are no Figures or Tables within that chapter. So the list looks like this:

    Chapter 1: Accumulator

         Fig. 1: Seperator

    Chapter 2: B

So, im assuming the only way around this is to take out Chapter tags completely and only refence the chapter number within the Figure tag and generate one long list...

Not necessarily. Apart from the obvious solution of some script to redact the empty headings from the generated file, you might be able to employ a first-instance formatting.

You'd use ordinary paragraph format "Figure.1" for the first figure in each chapter, then "Figure" thereafter.

Generated format FigureLOF would be the normal:

    <indent>Fig. #: Figure text<tab and/or leaders>pagenum

Generated format Figure.1LOF would be (all one paragraph with forced return <):

    Chapter #: Chapter Title<

    <indent>Fig. 1: Figure.1 text<tab and/or leaders>pagenum

Caveat - I've never needed nor attempted this.
