Creating TOC hierarchy using folders in books

Hello all, in the user guide of FM9 I read that folders in books are used to create hierarchy levels. So I assumed that when I place a document in a folder, then it would move a level lower in the TOC and in PDF output (e.g. a heading formatted as level 1 would become a heading level 2). Is this a total misconception of mine, and if yes, what would be the use of folders besides manually changing the numbering settings?

    Robert,

    Folders give you access to the additional numbering properties of sections and subsections. But it is still your responsibility to use those numberings in paragraph formats and to select the correct hierarchy of PDF bookmarks. There is no way that some book settings would change the formatting inside documents (just the pagination and numbering).

    Thanks for the clarification. I saw the numbering option but reading the FrameMaker documentation made me think that I may have overlooked something. Do you know any example or scenario for this feature? Why would I use folders in books if I can only change the numbering, which I can do anyway on document level?

    I would guess the feature is mainly of interest for XML publication where you might want to create hierarchy for many separate topics (aka XML files) using this feature.
