I've been experiementing with manual and automatic text insets, and I can't figure out the difference between them when updating. Can someone tell me the difference between how they act and if you have a preference? I use Framemaker 10 unstructured.
Thanks

When you import a text inset externally its automatic and the complete text will come as text inset (for example if you simply import a Ms word file,it will come as text inset),you can change it and edit it if you want.
Manual are when you create text insets so that you can use it various places in you doc.
here is the link for more knowledge about it http://www.stc-carolina.org/tiki-download_wiki_attachment.php?attId=103

If you are talking about the choices of "Automatic" and "Manual" presented under "Updating of Imported Flow" in the "Import Text Flow by Reference" dialog, then automatic means that when you make a change to the inset source file, the inset updates upon opening the destination file. If you select, manual then the inset does not update upon opening the destination file; you must select Edit-->Update References in order to update it.
Response based on Frame 11.

I tried that—I changed the text inset, but when I opened up the container doc where I imported it as automatic, it didn’t update until I hit the update button.
