FM8 to PDF, book opens on wrong page

Our process for creating PDFs from FrameMaker (Print Selected Files to ***.ps, then run Acrobat Distiller to create ***.pdf) leaves the PDF in a state where it opens to page 7, not page 1.

We have front matter in our books that are numbered i-vii. We're guessing that the problem is caused because Acrobat page 1 is Roman Numeral "i", and Acrobat page 7 is Arabic Numeral "1", but I don't really know that.

We have a workaround: opening the PDF in Adobe Acrobat, choosing File->Document Properties, clicking the Initial View tab, and changing the Open to Page Number setting to "1."

Is there anything we can do in our source files in Frame so we don't have to do this work around?

Thanks.

Dana

Dana,

In the PDF Setup dialog box (from the Frame Print dialog box), set Open PDF Document on Page to i (lowercase I). That is what I do, and it works.

Dana:

You might also find the PageLabeler plugin for F'Maker 7 useful:

We tried this with no luck. And to confuse matters, it doesn't always happen. We haven't pinned down why yet.

Thanks for your suggestion, though!

The issue is likely because you're printing selected files to PostScript. Look at the Acrobat settings of the last file that you're printing. Specifically, look at the property that specifies which page to open the PDF to. As the PostScript file is distilled, the distiller will go through the files in order. It will set the properties of the PDF based on the settings in the last file it processed, because it comes last.

The solution is to make the settings for all of the files consistent. Then you can print the files (or the entire book) and the PDF will open to the page you specified.
