Formatting Table of Contents in Responsive HTML5

Hello, first post here.

I am productin an approximately 800-page book for an AI company. The files are all produded in the book, with files nested under folders, with one file formatted as Chapter, and subsequent files formatted and Heading 2 or Heading 3.

However, when I publish in Responsive HTML, the table of contents displays everything in a single display, even showing files in Heading 4.

In the "Set Up Table of Contents" option, I select entries up to TOC 2, but FrameMaker seems to ignore this.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi

It is not altogether clear what you are attempting to do and I think we may need a little more detail. Is this a structured document? Or are you working in unstructured mode? What version of FrameMaker are you working in? Can you give us a screendump of your TOC setup? As I understand it, you would like the HTML5 menu to have the same structure as the graphic "required.png" - is that right? Have you chosen a tag for parting the content into topics like here?:

Hello Bjorn,

Thanks for responding. I have the latest FrameMaker, 2022, version 17.02.
I'm working on an unstructured document, I have the tags set to split after the main heading (in this case h2_headingH2).

That's not the TOC - do you have a generated TOC file? It would be named booknameTOC.fm

What's it look like in the book? I can't tell from that screenshot (which btw is a pain to look at when it's attached - please use the Insert Photos icon in the web interface to embed them in your post) that it's an actual generated TOC (vs. a manually created one).

Can you please share the screenshot of your book file? It sounds like you're nesting your Fm files, and if so, does the problem resolve if you remove the nesting?

Hi, I'm including a screenshot of the book file, along with the output and what the table of contents looks in Framemaker. The Responsive is starting to look better, but the nesting is still out of whack.

Your framemaker_toc.png image shows the middle of your book, but not the TOC file.

At the top of the book file, is the icon for the file used for frame_toc.png should be orange. Is it orange or white?

Great, you've confirmed that the TOC is being generated.

You've also shown the top of the HTML5 TOC...

Can you share a shot of the top of the generated TOC?

Basically, the nesting in the HTML5 nav comes from the top level of your TOC.

It looks like you have an entry (Cerence Cloud Services - OneCloud) that is not included in your Fm TOC. I think that is what is keeping the other items from nesting under it.

Add that title paragraph style to your list of paragraph styles used for the TOC, and I think your other items will nest under the top entry.

If not, you might need to have someone put their hands on it to resolve the issue.

If you don't already have a generated TOC in your Fm book file, create one and format it.

Then republish the HTML5

@Michel323660650264 If you are interested I won't mind taking a look at the project outside this forum. I do have a lot of experience with the conversion process to HTML5. You can reach me at info@framemaker.dk

I finally resolved the issue, even though it's not the prettiest solution. I was moving from MadCap Flare to FrameMaker, where MadCap has everything in its individual topic. I tried the same with FrameMaker, which produced the unnested side table of contents.

So, I simply divided the book into its three or four main chapters, and all the chapter-specific material is contained in that one chapter.

Glad to hear you got it figured out!

Topic-based authoring (DITA, RoboHelp, Flare) is a different perspective than "standard" FrameMaker, with its book paradigm.

The good news is that now that the nav works as you like, it'll be easy to edit and reoutput both PDF/Print and online formats.
