Framemaker 2020 slow and shortcuts not working

Enthusiast ,
Apr 14, 2021 Apr 14, 2021

We've just upgraded to FrameMaker 2020 and have run into 2 problems/concerns.

1. Speed.

Opening documents is extremely slow. Opening a document in 2019 would take approx 10 seconds. In 2020 it takes almost a minute to open the same document. If it's a document heavy on graphics (as most of ours are), once the document finally opens, you an actually see the graphics loading one by one. From the time you open the document to the time you can actually start working on it is almost 2 minutes in FM2020. Even scrolling is slow, it's like each page is being rendered/loaded as it comes into view. Even after you've viewed each page in the document at least once. Opening more than one document causes FM to stop responding (Not Responding message in title bar) until both documents are loaded.

2. Shortcuts

Esc fio and Esc fif don't seem to work in FM 2020. Other shorcuts, like Esc fa, Esc fwp, Esc ti, Esc sa are working.

Because someone will ask: are the imported objects on the local machines, LAN, WAN or in a CMS?

…not that this would necessarily explain the generational performance drop…

@Bob_Niland: Good point. I should have included that information.

All documents and images are on the server, accessed via LAN.

Hi,

Which version do you have? Can you check, if you have update 1? That is 16.0.1.817?

This update fixed a number of issues.

Then check the speed again.

I do not have this issue, even with a document with about 1000 JPG files.

Can you also check, if your antivirus software makes a difference? Can you deactivate it and test this again?

I do not use ESC fif, but ALT+fif, and that's the same command. I just tested both, and they work.

However, ESC fio does not work. ALT+fio works.

You can create a bug report in the Adobe Tracker, so that this gets fixed:

Best regards

Winfried

That's interesting to know. I'm working with Framemaker for the first time in my life and I've started using it with the latest version FM2020 (16.0.1.817). I don't have any experience with older versions of FM. Some of the documents in my book do take a long time to become active (at least to become able to browse the document) and I was always thinking that it was because of the linked images in that document. Some of them are large "ai" formatted (Adobe Illustrator) or "psd" (Adobe Photoshop) formatted files.

My linked images are all located on my own drive and not on LAN or WAN. The directory where these files are located is not synced to a CMS or to the cloud. I'm manually backing up my Framemaker files at the moment because I'm waiting on some IT support to connect FM to our CMS.

deniztech: Some of them are large "ai" formatted (Adobe Illustrator) or "psd" (Adobe Photoshop) formatted files.

At the risk of forking the thread, it's always amazed me that FM had input filters for .ai and .psd, and kept up with their feature churn. These file formats are huge, take time to render for preview, and who knows how much needless extra metadata ends up in the workflow (including to PDF).

My practice has always been to export a more efficient format from Ai or Ps, such as EPS (with thumbnail).

Hi @QuintinSeegers:

Esc fio has never worked for me in 2020. Esc fif has consistently worked in 2020.

@Winfried Reng offered an excellent work-around until this is fixed. He is using the Windows shortcuts which happen to line up with the Fm letters. This doesn't always work because of case-sensitivity issues, but it works great here.

@Winfried RengI am using the latest 16.0.1.817. If I open the same document in FM 2019, I don't have any of the issues I've listed, so to me, that eliminates any environmental issues, i.e. Antivirus. I stopped using Alt fio because I've found that FM more often than not, responds too slow to the keystrokes, always missing the 'i' keystroke and instead of opening the Import screen, it opens all my recent documents instead. I will log a bug report, as you've suggested.

@Barb BinderGlad to hear others have experienced the same issue with the shortcut Esc fio. I can confirm that Esc fif does work for me as well.

Hey @QuintinSeegers ,

For point 1 Speed :
This could be occurring due to some network delay since your images are references over the network, Just try out the following :
Check one of property present in preference "Edit -->Preference--> General--> "Do not check updates images and multimedia " and see if it makes it a little easy for you?

For point 2 shortcuts :

We are investigating an issue with the tracker ticket logged: FRMAKER-9908

Thanks

@pulkitnAccessing the same document (with the document and images located on the network) in FrameMaker 2019 does not present the speed issue. It only presents in FrameMaker 2020, which leads me to believe it's an issue with FrameMaker. I'm hesitant to select the option "Do not check for Updated Images & Multipmedia" as editors and writers rely on the correct image to be displayed when adding/updating content.

I look forward to a fix for the FRMAKER-9908 ticket.
