FrameMaker 2022 upgrade is agonizingly slow

Hi all, I finally upgraded to FrameMaker 2022, and it's incredibly slow. Pages take forever to load, and publishing a 70-page document took almost 20 minutes. Any action I try to take results in 10 or 20 seconds of waiting. There is clearly something wrong. Is there an FAQ/troubleshooting guide available for this? Has anyone else had this problem?

UPDATE: We found a workaround by moving everything from the server to Dropbox. This is not ideal, but it's what we have to do. It is very frustrating that FrameMaker now seems unable to pull referenced images from a server.  That's kind of central to everything I do at my job!

I've had such cases on some computers. In my case it was the Windows security/virus scan process (no 3rd party application, just Window's own tools) which permanently inspected files, e.g., when writing a PDF.  The solution was to add "FrameMaker.exe" to the exclusions from virus scanning in the Windows system/security settings. Without FrameMaker being permanently watched the speed on opening or writing files was back to normal immediately.

Here is a link to the posting I made back then: https://community.adobe.com/t5/framemaker-discussions/windows-defender-antivirus-real-time-protectio...

Thanks. My company's IT is telling me we can't do that as we won't allow exclusions for certain apps or software to remain unscanned. 😞

Version 17.0.0.226. I just upgraded from 2019 to 2022 last week -- Thursday or Friday.

You have the first 2022 release. The current release is 17.0.5. You can check for updates by going to Help > Updates. You will need administrator rights to download and install it.

Thank you. We went ahead and updated to 17.0.5, but it's still very slow. We've narrowed the problem down to the images, all of which are Import by Reference. It's taking a long time for FrameMaker to pull those images. This was not an issue in my 2019 version. I'm wondering if this is due to my computer being old (2020--I am scheduled to get a new one in January). Thanks for your help.

We're using referenced images in all our manuals, without exception. These are all located on a file server, never locally on the PC with FrameMaker. You should at least consider running a test with one of your IT guys, by temporarily excluding FrameMaker.exe from the security scans (during runtime, it's not about installation). If you notice a difference in performance, you can still discuss how to solve that. It's also possible that this is not the root cause in your case, then you can simply forget this solution and have the IT guys sleep well again… 😉

Same here -- all referenced images stored on a file server. I'll pass on your suggestion to IT. Thanks!

You can try choosing View > Options and unchecking Graphics to see if that helps temporarily. You won't see the imported graphics, but that is not always important if you are just doing text edits.

Thanks! This is very helpful. At least I can now get some work done while IT is trying to figure out and fix the problem. Thanks again.

We've had a similar issue since we upgraded from FM2019 to FM2022. All our files (documents and images) are on the server and took a long time to load. When there was a page with multiple graphics, it is like FM is loading the images one at a time, refreshing the page after each one.  Fortunately, each our documents are 'mostly' self-containted within their own folders, so our solution is to copy the whole folder down to the local drive, work on it, then copy it back to the server. We're fortunate that only a single user work on the files at a time, so we don't have an issue with users overwriting each other's changes. Our solution might not work for you, but there is definitely something that changed in FM2022 from FM2019 in that it doesn't load the whole document (including graphics) into memory when the document first loads, but more like when each page is rendered. (I'm no expert, just my opinion and observation)

This is exactly what is happening! The page just refreshes and refreshes and refreshes. It did help to change the "View Graphics" setting as someone else suggested. It seems like a pain to have to copy to the local drive, but that may work for us if we can't get FrameMaker to work as it should.

We're going to try it on a different computer. Currently I'm the only one with the FrameMaker license, but I'm scheduled to get a new laptop soon. We'll see if it works better on the new laptop. My current one is about 5 years old.

Maybe the issue is how you access that server - you've got FM installed locally on your laptop; the FM files (& images) are all on the server & you're launching them inside FM. But are you using some VPN mechanism to access that server these days or are you in the office directly connected to your server through the LAN?

I am in the office, directlyi connected. I occasionally work remotely and access everything via VPN when I do, but I haven't tried to use the FrameMaker upgrade remotely yet. This was never an issue with FrameMaker 2019, but it is with FrameMaker 2022.

I suspect you'll find accessing it via VPN is slower than molasses - pre-pandemic I was doing 4/5 days remote and found that I needed to RDP into a workstation in the office that had FM installed on it and the files on the server; afterwards we went entirely remote and I was forced to move all my FM content locally and just use the server as a backup location (only possible because I'm the lone author).
If nothing has changed in your environment except the upgrade, I would give the FM folks a ping - see https://helpx.adobe.com/contact/enterprise-support.other.html#framemaker for your Adobe Support options. I'd recommend using the tcssup@adobe.com e-mail address as it reaches a team dedicated to Technical Communication Suite products including FrameMaker.
