In unstructure FrameMaker, trying to save a doc as PDF. I get this message:

Save as PDF error.jpg

When I proceeded anyway, I got this message:

FrameMaker serious problem.jpg

Oh great, that's unreadable. Well, it says: "Internal Error 10014, 7686536, 7686826, 10069773. FrameMaker has detected a serious problem and must quit."

It also says a file was generated "which contains information that may help Frame development improve the product for future releases." But I do not see this file.

I believe that a PRN file is the default file type out-of-the-box in FrameMaker, when you have the "Print to File"option selected.

Since I lately had to re-install FM7.0 at home, I can confirm that .prn is the default.

Of course, if your default printer is in fact a PostScript printer, you could just change the file's .prn extension to .ps after printing.

More typically, your default printer will be some other PDL (such as HP PCL), or a real, but limiting PS (e.g. simplex gray only), that will result in unsatisfactory PDF when Distilled.

_______

And yes, you can print PCL to file. Back before PDF, I used to do that, and use the DOS "COPY /B" command, or its Unix equivalent, to dump .pcl binary print files to LaserJets (but not DeskJets, as their PCL was sufficiently different in those days to ensure fail).

I believe the .tps file is just a temporary PostScript file and I have successfully distilled it by just dropping it into the Distiller window (or just open it with Distiller). Remember to delete it later because PostScript data tends to be on the huge side. Sometimes the only output I get from FM10 (I also have TCS 3) is the .tps and I have to complete the sequence because for whatever reason FM is unable to initialize and start Distiller (acrodist.exe).

In the normal sequence of events, when saving as PDF from FM10, the .tps file is created, then the .pdf is created and then the .tps is automatically deleted.
