Question

FrameMaker V9.0 will not PDF a large book

I recently installed FrameMaker V9.0 and have successfully made a few smaller books into PDF files. However, some larger books will not PDF and I get an Internal Error. I have installed the Hot Fix, defragged and cleaned my hard drive, and deleted FNTCACHE.DAT.

From reading the various discussions on this site, it seems like the only fix is to buy Adobe Acrobat V9.0. Can that be so?? I have already spent 1000K on the FM product. Can someone please confirm for me? Thanks so much,

Janis

Janis, information on your environment would be helpful... OS, amount of RAM, disk free space, whether the files are local or on the network, etc.

Have you applied all patches (Help > About)?

Are you running with the limited version of Acrobat Distiller that's installed when you install Frame, or with another version of Acrobat Distiller?

Are you using SaveAs PDF or printing to the PDF printer instance?

When you print the problem book, did you try opening all files in the book to eliminate any error messages and network problems?

    Hi Art,

I am on an IBM laptop with XP Professional (service pack 3)

    Intel Duo CPU

    2.53 GHz

    2.96 GB of RAM

115 GB free hard disk space

I have the files all locally on my only drive (C:) and my path is about 32 characters.

I do not have Adobe Acrobat on my system.

I have applied the MS Hotfix

I have mercilessly cleaned my drive and defragged

I am using the Save As PDF from my FrameMaker menu.

I am going to try the PDF Printer option, but hate to lose the left panel hypertext TOC (user's are used to this).

I can print the entire book, no problems.

I have PDF'd each individual chapter separately to see if any are corrupt, and they all PDF fine.

I have removed the last three chapters from the book (to bring down the page count) and it prints fine.

I can print another book that is 184 pages, but I cannot print this one that has 312 pages (unless I eliminate three chapters).

Any help would be much appreciated.

I am on hold for the last 2-1/2 hours (seriously) with Adobe.

Uh, Janis, didn't you say you were going to try Printing to the PDF printer and making sure that Generate Acrobat Data checkbox was activated? Not activating it is the reason you're not getting bookmarks, not because of a sofrware problem. Activate it and you'll get the bookmarks -- assuming, of course, that you have also clicked the PDF Setup button and recorded what you want to bookmark.

If the PDF is still not generating, go into PDF Setup again. On the Tags tab, uncheck Generate tagged PDF and try to Print to the Adobe instance again.

And, as mentioned in the earlier message, did you open all files in the book before attempting to print it?
