Highlighting variables/cross-references in text (similar to Microsoft word)

Is there a way to have the variables/cross-references highlighted or grayed out in text so you can see what fields are variables or cross-referenced, similar to Microsoft Word?

You can do this for variables. Choose Edit > Preferences and go to the Variables tab.

Think that's been a wishlist item before - I suspect the workaround is to use a Character Format to identify them.
