How do I install Acrobat Distiller Version 5.05 or higher

Correct answer PRS2

Some of the older versions of FM were hard-wired to look for certain Distiller components in specific locations that changed around Acrobat 7-8 (I can't remember the exact version and don't have my support system avalable right now to verify). So using the SaveAsPDF option can fail with an older version of FM in conjuction with a newer version of Acrobat/Distiller.

Printing to the PDF printer instance or to postscript and manually distilling would still work.

Hello,

I appreciate every one’s help on this issue. I reinstalled FrameMaker 10 from the original CD. It is now working correctly. Please consider this issue as closed.

Which version of FrameMaker?

If you installed using the default options, you should have the correct PDFCreator (PDF printer instance) installed that will work for your FM version.

If you already had a version of Acrobat installed,  default FM installation would overwrite the Distiller version and create problems. In that situation,  you may need to uninstall FM and repair the Acrobat installation. Then re-install without the PDF Creator option.

If the intent is to run a newer version of FM (FM 7.0 shipped with full Acrobat 5.05 as I recall), and the newer FM version included only the limited Distiller (PDF creator), but you want to also be able to run the old full Acrobat 5.05, you really can't, without isolating it in a VM like XP Mode.

Acro 5.05, assuming it isn't damaged by installing the later FM's PDF creator, is probably incompatible with later FMs. One symptom would be that Save-as-PDF wouldn't be reliable, and perhaps wouldn't work at all.

Multiple versions of FM can co-reside on the same machine. The same is not also true for the Distiller in full Acrobat, Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro.

Older FMs theoretically work with newer Distillers, so one solution is to obtain and install the latest Acrobat Standard or Pro.

On what operating system?

If you are on Windows 7 or later, you can't, natively, (and if you could, it wouldn't work). My assumption is that this is due to yet another major incompatible change to the Windows Driver Model. MS is becoming infamous for the perfect final and only APIs you'll ever need (until the next release).

If you are on Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise, or are willing to upgrade to one of those, you can install Acrobat 5.05 in XP Mode. I'm running exactly that, in that manner, on Win7 Pro.
