Hello,

I have 85 microsoft word files that I would like to select and convert to 85 frame maker documents.

But I would like to do it at the same time (not one after one). How to do this ?

Hi Pierre:

Scripting isn't my area of expertise, but like Jeff, I think this can be scripted. I'm a trainer, so need to focus on using FrameMaker's core feature set so that I can explain it to others.

What you could do is use File > Open and not File > New > Document. FrameMaker can open a Word file (or multiple Word files if you add the Control key or the Shift key), and it will give the files the Word file name. You can use Shift + Save all Open files to save all the files at once.

Maybe with a script? Maybe @frameexpert has one kicking around for sale...

Actually I have made a test on 3 Word documents :

1) Create New document (Control+N) and we select the 3 Word documents at the same time.

2) We click on "Convert" (from Word 2016). Result : it creates 3 Frame maker documents in 3 separate tabs.

3) I click on close Frame Maker, and it asks me to save. So I save in a folder. But I have to click OK 3 times (one save for each document).

If I have 85 Microsoft Word document, I will have 85 tabs opened in Frame Maker, and I will have to click 85 times to save each Frame Maker document.

Is it a way to do this more easy and quickly ?

@Barb Binder

Finally, I have 85 tabs opened in Frame Maker (each with "noname"), so I am obliged to "save as" each tab in order to change the name of each tab. As these tabs are coming from 85 Word files (with their  proper name each), I have not succeeded to import Word files with their proper name directly.

However... in an earlier post you were asking about a template. This is going to import the Word styles/formatting into each of the files so you'll have to remove the Word formatting, and then import the styles (and other formatting categories) from your template document. I know Rick has a script to automate the removal of elements from multiple files (this is something that FrameMaker is not good at) and you can import your templates styles back in to multiple files at one time, once they are added to your book.

Hi Barb,

Thanks to you I can now import Word files content with their proper name into FM documents !

And I have also contacted Rick (Frameexpert) about its script.

For a test, I have opened 3 Word documents with their proper names : Control +O + select the 3 Word documents.

So FM opened 3 FM documents with the names of the Word file.

But is it a way to do the same, with a conversion to plain text also ?

My goal is to have the 3 Word documents opened in FM, with the proper names of the Word files,  and in plain text automatically.
