how to fix "the xxx font is not available" error?

Hi,

I looked back several screens for a discussion of what to do to get rid of this type or error. I remember it had something to do with exporting the file to MIF, editing something out of the MIF file and then reopening the MIF file in Framemaker.

My attempt to clean out the offending font did not quite work.

For example, I got this error (Frame 7.2 on Windows XP):

The "Symbol Bolded" Font is not available.
  "Symbol" will be used in this session.

When I searched the file for text tagged with that font, the Find dialog didn't show Symbol Bold, so I don't know where it is hiding.

I saved it as a mif file and searched for the symbol font. I found this tag definition:

         <FFamily `Symbol'>
         <FWeight `Bolded'>

         <FSize  14.0 pt>

I deleted that and then opened the mif file in Frame. It looked OK but when I used the Ctrl+Alt+click from the TOC to jump to a section heading, I got the error again.

So can someone illuminate me as to the proper way to remove these phantom fonts?

Assuming that the substitution is acceptable:

File > Preferences

uncheck

[_] Remember Missing Font Names

(in 7.1 anyway)

You may need to Save. Re-open. Re-save.

And you can control the font mapping with maker.ini

I do not believe the standard Symbol font has a bold version. You may be able to apply bold within a FrameMaker document, but the error is telling you that a bold version does not exist.

Probably not.

Traditionally, "Bolded" (vs. "Bold") was one or several font effects that Frame could apply when the print path was PostScript. (although in the case of Symbol, it doesn't seem to do anything).

The usual lament was that a PC user had successfully created a document with some fonts Bolded, but got an error on later re-opening. This was usually because they created it with a PS or PDF "Printer" configured, but had a non-PS (e.g. PCL) printer configured at re-open.

For the current thread, close the document, make sure the default printer is PS or PDF, then re-open.

For a shocking experience, open a Frame document with a daisywheel printer configured.

Error,

I searched for instances of the Symbol font and found a few instances of the Greek letter mu (e.g., "20 um particle size") but they were not bold.

I changed them to read "20 microns" and the error stopped.

Next question, how did the previous writer get that Greek letter into the file? Unlike Word with its multiple tables of symbols, there is a very short list of symbols under the Symbol button in Frame 7.2. I tried Special -> Equations but got an error when I clicked on a Greek letter.

The online help was useless in explaining how to use the Equations dialog.

In versions 9 and 10 of FrameMaker, there is a character entry tool. In version 7.2, you have to change the font to Symbol and type the appropriate character, which for mu is probably m. When I used 7.2, I made use of the Windows Character Map (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map). In that tool, you can select the Symbol font, then select the character you want (or even a sequence of characters), copy the selection, and paste into your Frame document.

Following Error's post...Look in

C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.2\OnlineManuals\Character_Sets.pdf

for a list of symbol characters, etc, and how to enter them.

Probably via typing the ordinary "m" character and applying the Symbol font to it.

But not all characters map to simple roman ones.

What platform?

On Windows or Mac, you can type any arbitrary character code value using the operating system's trick for that. On Unix, Frame has a Control-q method for direct entry, and a \x@@ method for dialogs. You need to sleuth out where the PDF describing this is hidden for your OS.
