How to fix this TOC Numbering?

So, the rest of my TOC is correct except for these two entries. I included a screenshot of the TOC lines with the header numbering and the page number as well as where it is in the book and the heading number that applies there with the page number from that page. I am trying to fix the last image with the green highlights. The TOC is saying the heading is only 7.3 instead of 7.3.1.1.1 and that the page number is 26 instead of 7.3-26.

I asked the senior TW at my job and they were not sure what the issue was.

Anyone have any info how to help with this?

Hi Angela:

FrameMaker is tough to teach yourself—it's not a hard program to use once you understand it, but it doesn't work like any other application so it's not intuitive. I have a bunch of free videos you can watch online—listed here. They don't replace attending a training class, but they may address some of your questions.

Back to this question—thank you for sharing your screenshots. Without being able to examine your file, I find your reference page baffling. But here's a general idea

… and the tab leader isn't there.

In the toc.fm file, see what's on Reference Page TOC.
Chances are there will be one or more <$paratext>…<$pagenum> template paras that don't match the others. Chances are this needs to be fixed at the source 7.3-26 page (due to unintended Paragraph Format applied), but it might also need an adjustment on that Reference Page.

Hi Angela:

It is always helpful to post screen shots with View > Text Symbols enabled. In this case, having the rulers visible too will help us address Bob's concern about the page number position.

Could you please enable the text symbols/rulers, and then click on heading in your first screen shot and make a note of the paragraph style? (It will be something along the lines of Heading5TOC.)

Then navigate to the TOC reference page. Click on the building blocks with the same style name applied (you have to click each one to find it) and then, with your cursor still on that line, share a screen shot with the entire reference page and top ruler visible.

Please repeat for the entry above (redacted in red) so that we can see the one that is working and the one that is not.

This should be a quick fix.

I think I have uploaded screenshots showing the reference page. Please see the attached. If this is not what yo meant, please let me know. I am learning FM as I go so it's been a process 😞

But here's a general idea: all of the lines should look essentially the same in terms of how the building blocks are set up. Those two lines at the top look completely different.

If the orange underlined line has the style name that points to the heading that isn't working—which I'm not convinced it is—try changing it to read:

<$paranum> <$paratext>\t<$volnum>.<$chapnum>–<$pagenum>¶

(\t is a tab, and you can just press the Tab key on keyboard. I can't tell if you need one or two.)

Then, update your book.

If it doesn't change at all, it wasn't the right line on the reference page—but one of them is. If possibly changing the wrong line makes you nervous, copy the TOC.fm file to a different location before you start. If this messes it up, you can just restore the copy.

Thank you for your help!

This definitely helped me understand and with the text symbols on, it made it much easier. It took some back and forth saving and updating, but I have it down now where all the headers, tabs, and numbering fall correctly. I inherited this project and unfortunately it is my first time using FM. I spent some time on your videos, but haven't been able to devote a full training session yet.

Thank you, again!!

Hi Barb, I just wanted to say a big thank you. I'm using FrameMaker and setting up templates from scratch after not using FM for over 20 years and your tutorials have been absolute life savers. I'm not sure how I would have even started without them. I've watched all 9 more than once! x
