Hello. I'm new to FrameMaker and would like to import a WordPerfect version 9 file into FrameMaker (FM) version 8.

My WordPerfect file contains linked jpgs, linked graphs, charts, footnotes, page cross references, and uses styles.

Any suggestions or tips on how to best convert this document to a FM document?

So far, my best effort involves the following:

1)removing all charts,
2)opening and SAVE AS MS Word 2007,
3)open with FM
4)individually re-insert and link to graphics

Is there an easier way?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum and to FM-land, Julie --

Without knowing whether you're having any specific issues in the conversion it's a bit hard to suggest what might be better. Do you have a lot of files to convert?

Other info that will give us some background for suggestions: Are you seeking to avoid the time/effort of the initial Word conversion, are you having problems with the resulting FM file(s), or are you concerned about time/results with item #4 "re-insert and link to graphics"?

Based on your inclusion of "footnotes" and "style" are you running into differences in how FM handles these as compared to WordPerfect?

Most important for setting yourself up for a long and happy FM future: when you say "re-insert and link to graphics", do you mean that you are 1) pasting/copying the files directly into FM, e.g. embedding them, 2) importing them as objects (using File > Import > Object), or 3) importing them by Reference (File > Import > File)?

Importing by Reference is by far the preferred way to go, unless there are some exceptional reasons otherwise. Are you keeping the graphics on your local system? Using consistent path naming? Getting started with a solid way to handle graphics right off the bat is well worth taking extra time up front.
