Importing Word 2007 numbered paragraphs into FrameMaker 10

When I import word 2007 files into FrameMaker 10 (using windows 7 pro) the numbering all revert to 1's. What is the proper way to import Word files so the numbering lists keep their correct formatting?

I am importing them into FrameMaker by opening them from the File menu (file -> Open). Doing this seems to copy the word files into FrameMaker, and I would prefer to import them by reference so I don't have to mannually update the information twice.

When I try to import them by reference (File -> Import -> file), only an un-editable "picture" imports, which will not allow any editing of the numbered lists.

What's a guy to do??

Thanks for your help.

When you import by reference, are you telling FM to use the paratags from the FM document that the content is being imported into or to use the Word document to control the visible formatting (and hence the autonumbering) of the text inset?

If you're using the FM paratags, do you have a corresponding paratag in FM (i.e. spelled exactly the same as the Word style aplied to the list) that is set to increment the autonumbers for your list paragraphs in Word?
