Line Break (br) inserted after table in Responsive HTML5

Participant ,

I'm finding that when I publish to Responsive HTML5, FM is inserting a line break (br) after each table. This is causing a large gap below every table that I don't want. There is no return or paragraph between the base of the table and the "text after table" paragraph in the FM file. Is this just something that FM does that you can't prevent? linebreak.pngexpand image

Upgrading to the latest version of FM has fixed this issue. The space after the tables is no longer there.

Hi,

I just created a test file with a table and a paragraph with text after the table.

However, I do not get such a large gap.

I get the empty paragraph which you have as well (<p></p>), but not the <br> which you have marked.

Can you describe, how you create the HTML file? What is the mapping?

Is the table inserted into an empty paragraph?

Best regards, Winfried

I have tables that were imported from a Word doc and reformatted, and tables I've inserted in an anchor paragraph and tables that are inserted in the text above the table. Nothing makes any difference to the result though.

Hi,

When I tested this, I do not get such a <br> tag, no matter, how I insert the table ;).

Can you describe, how you create the HTML file? What is the mapping? Do you map the table or the paragraph with the table anchor to something? Or do you just use the automap feature? Or do you select "[Use Source Style]" for the Output Style? (The last one is what I used in my test.)

What do you get, when you create a new document with the FrameMaker default template with a table and text and convert this to HTML5?

Best regards, Winfried

They're both Use Source Style. Here's what I got making a blank doc and inserting a table. I published to a default HTML layout and I didn't touch the HTML mapping at all. For some reason the text above and below the table shows as different font sizes (the HTML is not seeing the para style for the text above the table) and the br is still there. defaultdoc.pngexpand imagedefaultdoc2.pngexpand image

Thank you very much. This helps. Mysterious.

I do not know, what you could do.

You don't mention the version (FM2022? FM2020?) and point version of your FM - please include that because it could be having an impact on how the HTML5 is being produced.

So FM2020 - I forget what the last patch version of that one was, but have you checked for updates?

How do you insert the table in FrameMaker? In a dedicated "anchor" paragraph or in the text above the table?

Both methods produce the same result.

Can we see a screenshot of the source FM doc (with text symbols turned on) of that example screenshot in the original post?

Was this working before and now doesn't; or was this the first time you've tried it? I wonder if testing out a copy of FM2022 might fix it - as Winfried is (I think) using FM2022 in his tests.

It's been like this from the start. Yes, that may be the solution. Unfortunately where I work that isn't simple and could take up to a year to facilitate 😐  I think I'll pretend I like it this way and just carry on 🙂

Just as an aside, is there much involved in updating docs from one FM version to another? I think I should push to get FM2022.

Hi,

No. Not difficult to move to a newer FrameMaker version. Just open all files of a book (press SHIFT while you open the File menu) and then save. That's it. There were only some issues, when FrameMaker had moved to Unicode, but this was from version 7 to 8, long ago.

The latest update of FM 2020 is 16.0.6.

Best regards, Winfried

@ArmadilloC - ah, so you are still a bit behind in FM2020 patches - maybe try updating & see if it got resolved in that last patch of FM2020.

Unfortunately I don't have access to update the software. The IT dept control all of that but I've put in a request to get 2022. Fingers crossed. We've just had a recent Windows update and my HTML output has gone truly screwy.

Usually IT depts are good at requests to update software with patches - it usually makes them [the software] more secure.
Btw - I haven't heard of any reports of any Windows updates lately that have affected how HTML output appears.
