I'm new to FM....running FM8 with vista and getting the error message " There are no fonts available on the printer. Cannot start Framemaker" on start up. Tried a re-install w/ no luck. I was able to open FM before, and now I get this message. Any ideas?? Help!

Sheila - thanks for the tip about checking the fonts directory; I'll keep that up my sleeve for next time. IT came by, went away baffled, came back with the Acrobat CD to try the "repair" option, went away again when that asked them for another CD, came back, uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat and voilà ... everything back to normal.<br /><br />As for service packs, you don't suppose they'd actually us they'd been tampering? <vbg> 5.1.2600, according to the ver command, but I don't know how to relate this to service-packs.<br /><br />A tip from a colleague, who's had similar problems with ArcView, came in handy during all the comings and goings: setting Microsoft Office Document Image Writer was enough to fool FrameMaker into starting up.<br /><br />N

I'd first double-check that the directory where Distiller's setup thinks the fonts are located actually does have fonts in it.

Could the IT dept have installed WinXP service pack 3 in your absence?

Back in the office after three weeks' leave, during which a colleague has been using my PC for some simple FM editing; this not to point the finger, but to say everything was fine as late as Thursday last ...

Now, with my log-on or with his, we get the "There are no fonts ..." message. Adobe PDF is set as the default printer, and full Acrobat 7.0 is alive and well: can't test Distiller with a .ps, because I don't have any, but Acrobat opens a .tif and and a .txt

From my text editor, on the other hand, File > Print with Adobe PDF or Adobe PostScript selected as printer is not working: when I select "Print to file", I don't get the file dialogue.

FM 8.0p277, XP: if anyone can give me some tips on what questions to pursue our "support" desk with, 'cos if something changed and it isn't the users who've changed it ...

Thanks to both of you...Simply setting the default printer to Adobe PDF fixed it. I am running the full up Pro 8 Acrobat. Don't know how it got unselected, but for now it all works fine.

    Thanks

    Julian,

As Sheila says. You may also want to consider using Sundorne's
SetPrint utility to ensure that the AdobePDF is the default printer
    every time FM starts. See

Julian, it sounds like you don't have a printer installed on your system. FM requires that there is a printer, and optimally a Postscript printer.

I don't know what the printer setup is in Vista as compared to XP, but ... do you have standalone Acrobat (not Reader, I mean the full Acrobat program)? If so, install that first, and it will set up a printer called something like "Adobe PDF". Set that as your system's default printer, in Windows, and then try the FM install.

If you don't have the full Acrobat program, you might be able to install the Acrobat Distiller that comes with FM, first, which will set itself up as a system printer (and it's Postscript), and then continue with the FM install.

Are you installing from a CD or with a downloaded trial version?
